People Present to Witness
Sailing of Big Stenmcr.
With the sailing of the steamer Roue
City, yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock,
the population of Portland was reduced
nearly 400 and tne vessel was filled to
her capacity with passengers. A num
ber who sought passage were refused
for the reason that the license re
quirements would permit of no more
bookings. . . ,
At this time of the year the travel
south la large and Is expected to con
tinue until after the first of the year
when it is proportionately "7d
and the records of the different steam
ship companies show that for the en
tire year the travel north to this port
from California exceeds the tra el
south. This would indicate that a
large number of the Eastern people
going to California under the special
rates on the railroads, and who are
credited to that state, come to Oregon
by the water route.
The number of people at the Alns
worth dock yesterday to witness the
departure of the Rose City and bid
their friends goodbye more f than
equaled those who sailed, and tne ar
rangements are entirely Inadequate for
handling that number of PePle
tain John Speler. Harbormaster, was
present with a portion of his ; force
and it was through his efforts that no
accidents occurred, the officials of the
aompany being helpless to control the
Cr?Tpon leaving this dock It has become
quite a difficult task to maneuver one
of these big steamers Into a P" ;
to pass through the present opening in
the new Broadway bridge. It is neies
sary to back through the opening of
"7 old Steel bridge before lci
headway can be onta nd Juhtflty
run through the opening with safety.
CAMIXO LIBEL SOT FORMAL
Vessel Expected to be Ready to Sail
for Portland Tonight.
When the steamer W.tijm picked
p the disabled Reamer Camino off
Cane Mears and towed her into ban
Francisco no arrangements were made
bTthelr captains as to the compensa
tion to be received for the work, but
they agreed that it would be decided
after a safe arrival. Yesterday the
Alaska-Pacific - Steamship Compan
owner of the Watson filed a libel suit
neainst the Camlno In the 'frai
Court of the Northern District of Cal
ifornia, but did not fix any a""1
requesting the court to assess the dam
ages It is understood that this la only
aformal proceeding and that the suit
will be settled out of court.
A diver was sent down under the
ste of the Camino and found that all
of the four blades of her Propeller
,had Slen carried away, but new blades
are being put on and the Camino is
expected to be ready to sail for Port
end thU evening on her regular run
The supposition is that the wheel of
the Camino. while revolving at high
speed, struck a submerged log.
