The present unsettled weather Is disquiet ing to hopgrowers. but they fear rather for its effect on pickers than on the crop. A continuance of the rain, however, might bo- come serious. No business Is being accomplished in the new crop. Several lots of fuggles are on the market, but there Is a lack of bidders. Considerable business has been done in new baled hops In California at IS cents and the opening in Oregon nay be at this figure. Yesterday's cables reported all the foreign markets quiet and unchanged. The weather in England was cloudy. New York wires said the state crop would be less than last year's and poor in quality. The Watervllle Times says of the condition of the New York crop: "September 1 will find most of the grow ers harvesting their crop. It is hard to say Just what proportion of the crop will be damaged by the mold, as the attack Is so uneven. The "Coblesklll Index" gives the estimate of about 75 per cent of the yards In Schoharie and the Middleburgh Val ley as affected by the mold. One grower here who began on Monday claims his crop is coming down In good shape. As a rule the crop looks good, being heavy and hops of a bright color." DAY'S PEACH RECEIPTS ARE DELAYED. Citrus Fruits are Firmer Sweet Potatoes Decline to 3 Cents. The supply of peaches on Front street was light yesterday, owing to the late trains, but the delayed shipments came In In time to All shipping orders. The market was firm and unchanged. Pineapples are selling now as well as In winter, as the quality Is the finest of the season. Oranges were 25 cents higher In Cali fornia. The season for valenclaa Is about finished and as navels will be late, there will be more or less of an Intermission this year, which will be filled with storage fruit. Lemons were also higher In the South. The exchange advanced its price SO cents, and It was hard to get cars started. A car of .sweet potatoes was unloaded and put on sale at 2 cents a pound. SARDINE PACK IN MAINE IS SHORT. Caaners are Behind 300,000 Cases Because Herring are Scarce. With a stock of 400.000 cases left over from the pack of 1011. Maine sardine pack ers find themselves facing a shortage in the supply for next year at the end of the present packing season. The normal park ot sardines in that state Is about 2.000.000 cases. In 1111 tho pack went to nearly 2.500.000. Of this total 300.000 was undis posed of when the canning season opened In June. This caused the packers to feel that even with a shortage of fish they would tart shipping in the fall with a normal sup ply. Unless there shall be an exceptionally large run of fish during the next eight weeks the season will end with a shortage of more thsn 300.000 cases In the Maine pack. The failure -of the herring to appear on the Maine coast is proving a hardship for those who depend upon the factories for a JJving In the summer. BCY1NG BOOM IN THE WOOL MARKET. With Tariff Danger Over. Mills are Large Purchasers. Operations in the Boston wool market are heavy, according to mall advices, which say: "Although the local wool market has re ceived additional impetus from the settle ment , of the tariff issue temporarily, the great Improvement In trading the past week Is but further evidence of the upward swing of the past fortnight and a tendency towards a "boom" which has been forecasted. The present market Is very strong, but there Is danger that the strength of the situation may be overestimated and the values go beyond an advisable limit. Manufacturers now feel free to go ahead and contract for raw material requirements to meet the large demands for fabrics.' Poultry Cleans Up. A moderate supply of poultry was received yesterdsy. and cleaned up without much trouble at the low prices now established. Dressed meats were scarce.
