"Unless there Is a substantial reduc
tion in insurance rates in San Francisco
very soon I shall take official action
to force the insurance companies to
do justice to the people of this city,
said Mayor Kolph today. "San Fran
cisco now is the best protected city in
the country and is spending; more
money on its fire protection system
than any other city, all things consid
ered. Everyone knows this. The in
surance companies know it, the ring'
that controls the insurance businesa
knows it. and no one denies It. nor does
anyone deny that the hazards in this
city are less than they are in most
cities.
"Nevertheless, the insurance rates
charged here are exorbitant. It Is
an inequity that the people of San
Francisco are tired of. One Rears com
plaints every hour of the day.
Tnless there is such a reduction
as is warranted in a very short time
I shall call a public meeting of the
citizens of San Francisco to take action.
Every improvement organization in San
Francisco will be asked to participate
in that meeting. I shall call for the
Chamber of Commerce and the Mer
chants' Exchange and the legal depart
ment of the city to attend and we will
thrash the matter out to a finish, even
to the extent of establishing a co-operative
company that will run all the old
line agencies from the city." -
Asylum Still Ahead of Fund.
SALEM. Or., Aug. 7. (Special.) The
maintenance for the Oregon State In
sane Asylum is still 24.384.6J ahead
of the appropriation, according to a
report submitted by Superintendent
Stelner to the State Board today. This
leaves $143,098.53 in the maintenance
fund out of" an appropriation of
$570,000.
