Following its action at Atlantic City last year In eliminating the "goat" from the initiatory proceedings, the Portland convention yesterday took ac tion prohibiting "horse play" at all times, even at social sessions. The smaller lodges protested some what against this. Portland will be affected somewhat by this decision, also, as . it has , been the practice on some occasions to introduce a little "funny business' at the social sessions following the initiation of some par ticularly well-known or popular man. The grand lodge official family was strengthened yesterday by the arrival of Alfred T. Holly, of Hackensack, H. J., secretary of the grand board of trustees. Mr. Holly just returned fronr the Democratic National conven tion at Baltimore and was highly elat ed over the nomination of Woodrow Wilson, his close friend. He will re main here nearly a week, as it Is his duty to close up the business of the grand lodge, paying all hotel bills and' other expenses contracted by the con vention. Job Harri man was indirectly charged today in the bribery trial of Clarence S. Darrow with knowledge of the plot to dyna mite the Los Angeles Times building before its destruction with the loss of 21 lives. An explosion in the courtroom could scarcely have created more surprise than the opening question of District ' Attorney Fredericks in the cross-examination of the noted Socialist leader and the prosecutor's declaration that he would show Harrlman as not only having prior knowledge of the Times disaster, but also that he knew of the bribery of McXamara Jurors. Almost the first question asked Har rlman by District Attorney Fredericks was whether he had personal knowl edge of the blowing up of the Los An geles Times building before It occurred. The witness said be did not. Harriman was then asked if ha was nt at San Luis Obispo on the nlornlng of October 1, 1910, the day after the Times was blown up. He said he was there with Edward Adams Cantrell, a member of the executive board of the Socialist party, and that . they engaged in campaign work. In South Dakota the state conven tion already has named Roosevelt men on the Republican ticket. Similar ac tion is expected in other states.' The President and Mr. Hilles are expected to concentrate their attention upon this question.
