of the world, notwithstanding the custom

of the European Continent, are all having

downward under the pressure of large pros
pective yields.
While the world's crop, though a large
ont. may not be exceaslve when balanced
igalnst the world'! requirements. It must
be remembered that the price of futures
opened at an unusually high level, being
influenced by the abnormal values of last
year, and the trend of the market now Is a
natural one toward an equitable basis.
Whether the real value of the new crop,
sased on the unfailing law of supply and
demand, win be found at 20 cent or at lo
cents remains to he demonstrated.
It is not manipulation, but the weight of
he flne crop prospecta that Is carrying the
market down. If there Is any manlpula
lon at all. it Is on the bull side of the mar
ket, but it haa been futile In staying the
-ours of prices. In California there Is a
junch of speculatora who Jumped Into the
market early and contracted a large part
of the crop of that state at 25 cents and
over. They expected to make a killing, as
they did last year, but they did not figure on
the possibilities of bountiful nature. They
and themselves now high and dry. stranded
by the receding tide of prlcea. and are
making a desperate effort to check the de

WEATHER CHECKS HOLIDAY TRADE
Car, of Imperial Valley Watermelons Ar
rive reaches From The Dalle.
The country demand for holiday produce
has not been as good as usual, owing to
the doubtful weather, but the orders picked
up considerably after 10 o'clock yesterday
morning.
Among the day'a receipts was a car of
Imperial Valley watermelons, which were
quoted at 1 cents a pound. Cantaloupes
were steady at 2.3al.S per crate.
The first Oregon peaches, grown by R.
H. Weber, of The Dalles, made their ap
pearance. They were of the Mayflower va
riety and were quoted at $1GLZ per box.
California peachea were In good supply and
sold at StcQll per box. Other -deciduous
fruits were steady.
Another shipment of 500 crates of Ha
waiian pineapples, from the Clark farm, ar
rived during the day.
Berries were In light supply and all kinds
were firm.
Vegetables generally were steady. A fine
shipment of peas came down from The
Dallea Beana were scarce. Good tomatoes
were also scarce.

Wheat Never Looked Better.
MOSCOW, Idaho, July I. (Special.) At
no time at this season of th year did the
crop . prospect look so well as they do
now In Latah County. The cutting of al
falfa hay has Just commenced and the yield
is larger than was ever known here with
out Irrigation.
Fall and Spring wheat never looked so
well. A trip from Farmington. Wash.,
south by Cora. Princeton, Potlatch. Pa-
louse. Viola. Troy. Kendrlck. Jullaetta.
Genessee and returning to Moscow showed
thousands of acres of wheat, oats and bar
ley, which it Is estimated will make record
yields, although th acreage la' said not
to be as large a last year. The season
has been Ideal for grain growing, and tim
othy hay will yield In abundance and of a
fine quality.
Fruit trees are loaded, especially with
pears and Wlpter apples. The cherry crop
will also be heavy. Potatoes never looked
better than at thla time. Oraslng and pas
ture lands have produced well thla season,
due to numerous and abundant rain, and
stock of all kinds Is In excellent condition.

Echo Crops Are Good.
ECHO. Or., July i. (Special.) The heavy
rains of the past week have been of great
benefit to the wheat In this vicinity. The
grain crop promises to be unusually heavy.
Harvesting will begin Immediately after the
Fourth. Some axe already cutting early grain
for hay. A number of combines were re
ceived In the last week In preparation for
the coming harvest. On Friday three com
bines and one separator were delivered.
Poultry Market Weaker.
The poultry market wa well supplied and
rather weak. Hens sold at 12 12 ft cents
and SDrincs-at 17S17M cents. Dresses
The egg market was strong under a small
supply and a growing demand.
Cheese was In good demand at the ad
vanced price. Butter was steady and un
chonged.

strengthened in the last week. The feature
has been the demand for medium fleeced
wools. Manufacturers appear to be paying
little attention to the political situation.
While sales already reported will yield deal
era a fair profit, higher prices appear cer
tain In the near future. A purchase of a
million pounds of medium fleeces was made
by one manufacturer to be ceiiverea as soon
as opened and graded at 20 cents for all

NEW YORK, July ?. Stocks made fur
ther upward progress today, the early move
ment having; more snap and breadth than
any of recent data. A considerable part of
the trading was in the Industrials, United
States Steel reassumlng Its old-time leader
ship at a smart advance.
Other shares that participated prominent
ly In the rise were the local tractions,
which reflected the more favorable phase
of the subway situation, Brooklyn Rapid
Transit rising to its best price in several
years. Shares o the electrical and equip
ment - companies also figured importantly,
but tobacco stocks were Inclined to react
after their phenomenal gains of the last
few weeks. .
As the session wore on, standard shares
participated in the general rise, with gains
most marked In Reading, Union Pacific.
Northern Pacific ChesaDeake & Ohio and
Missouri Pacific Profit-taking later wiped
out most of theBe advances and business
came to a standstill, but the market's strong
understone was maintained up to' the last
hour, when some heaviness followed the
news from Baltimore. The close was Ir
regular.
A local feature of interest was the heavy
drain of the local banks to the sub-treasury.
resulting largely from payments to the Gov
ernment Incident to the close of the fiscal
year. The loss thus far this week exceeds
813.000,000 and probably win increase, ue
suite receiDt from the interior.
There was a better demand for long lonn
money, but no appreciable change of rates.
The only news of Importance from abroad
was another fall in consols.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value, 8.1,217,000. United States Government

CHICAGO. July 2. Sentiment turned
bearish today regarding wheat. The basis
was the general rainfall covering the Spring
crop country last night and thle morning.
All talk of crop damage Northwest had
to stop for the time being as a result of the
plentiful deposit of moisture In the Dakota
and Minnesota. Beside there were predic
tion of further showers In the same sec
tion tonight. Longs unloaded freely. Con
siderable short selling wa done until the
market began to react, owing to fear that
the harvest and the crop movement Soutn
west would be delayed by wet weather.
Prospect of a big decrease In the world s
available supply helped also to remedy prices
to some extent.
Com weakened In consequence of line
weather and the eagerness of cash demand,
as weir as because of the setback to wheat.
Heavy liquidation in July formed the cnior
feature In the oats trade. Dealers reported
increased offerings irom mo imuun.
