SAILER IAS RECORD
Irene Makes San Pedro From
Columbia Under 8 Days.
EXACT TIME IS NOT KNOWN
Four-Masted Schooner Took on
Large Cargo of Lumber at St.
Helens and Evidently Ran
Into Northwestern Gale.
The four-masted schooner Irene, Cap
tain Mitchell, which arrived at San
Pedro from the. Columbia River Satur
day afternoon, has undoubtedly made a
record for sailing: vessels between these
two ports, but her exact tlm-a cannot be
computed until the exact hour of her
departure and arrival are learned. That
her sailing- time was less than eight
days Is certain, which makes a remark
able passage.
The Irene left the Columbia with a
large cargo of lumber loaded from the
St. Helens mill of the. McCormick Lum
ber Company, and which included the
usual heavy deck load.
Captain Mitchell, who Is one of the
most skillful of the coasting; sailing:
masters, evidently ran into a northwest
frale that stayed with him all the way
down the coast.
RICK.MERS WILD CARRY GRAIN"
Largest Sailing Vessel Afloat Will
Take Wheat to Europe.
The German flve-masted bark. R. C.
Rickmers. the largest sailing vessel
afloat, has been chartered to load grata
it this port for Europe during the
present season, but will not arrive
Until near the first of the year, as she
SRiled from Philadelphia for Hlogo May
30. and will come from there in ballast.
The R. C. Rickmers is S548 tons, and
will carry a cargo of 7000 tons of
wheat. She is reported to be coming
to Kerr. Gilford & Co. at 36 shillings,
the low rate being on account of her
large carrying capacity. She carries
two auxiliary gasoline engines for use
in calm weather, and she is handled as
far as possible with motor engines.
There are now 14 sailing vessels
listed for this season's grain out of
this port, the highest rate being re
ported as 40 shillings for the Kil
learny, which is now said to come to
the Portland Flouring Mills and not as
previously reported.
Fifteen Vessels Dne In Few Days.
Fifteen steam coasting vessels were
listed yesterday to arrive at this port
within the next few days, which Is an
exceptionally large number, and is one
of the best signs of the increase of the
coastwise business within the past few
years. If such a number of similar
vessels were listed a few years ago it
would have caused universal comment
in shipping circles. This number was
reduced before the day was over by the
arrival of the Breakwater from Coos
Bay and the Lyra from Salina Crux
' via San Francisco. A heavy north
wester is blowing off shore, which Is
delaying the arrival of several more
which should have arrived last even
ing. , ' Ton of Halibut Caught.
' ASTORIA. Or., June 30. (Special.)
The deep sea fishing schooner Moon
light returned last night from a few
days' cruise off the Oregon coast with
a catch of a ton of halibut.

Marine "Notes.

bia River to load lumber.
The schooner Annie M. Campbell
sailed from San Pedro on ' Saturday
evening for this port to load lumber
for a return.
.""he redwood off-shore shipment
from Eureka, during the six months
ending June 30, amounted to 25,300,467
feet.
- General Manager Talbot, of the Port
of Portland, is at San Francisco call
ing on the shipping owners and ex
plaining the reasonable towing rates
in and out of the Columbia.
The former gunboat Bennington,
whose boiler exploded at San Diego a
few years ago with fatal results, has
been converted into a barge and is
bringing bulk molasses from Honolulu
to this Coast.
; The steamer j itSo. W. Elder, which
was due last night from San Francisco,
is reported to have found a stowaway
on board and stopped at Harbor View
to put him ashore.
The -steam schooner Carlos reports
that when off Cape Blanco on Thurs
day last a 30-foot fish scow was sight
ed, on the stern of which were the
letters "P. C. K. G."
- Through the instrumentality of the
- Volunteer Life Saving Service, an or
ganization of the Portland Motor Boat
and the Oregon Yacht Club, life buoys,
with, lines, have been located at many
convenient places along the water
