Old Offender Pays 925 Bather Than
Forfeit Bonds ot $100.
After years of periodical arrests
with varying; fortune in the outcome,
George Simpson, keeper of a Burnslde
street lodging-house, "stubbed his toe"
yesterday, through one of the most
peculiar situations that ever arose In
Police Court h.re. Though aU the evt

is usually the case when Simpson la
Involved, the defendant found himself
in the dilemma of having forfeited hla
ball, with no recourse unless he con
sented to plead trail ty and pay a fine.
"I'd rather pay lis than J100." ha said,
with a wry face, and it was ao or
dered. .
Last Sunday a transient named
Schultz complained that he had been
assaulted by Simpson, and the lodging;-
housekeeD.r was arrested. The case
was called shortly after court con
vened Monday morning, and there be
ing no appearance, the ball of 1100 was
declared forfeited. A few minutes later
Simpson and his attorney appealed
and asked to have the caaa reopened.
Meantime the complaining witness had
disappeared. Judge TaxwelL knowing
Simpson's record, refused to reopen the
eaaa unl.as he pleaded guUty and paid
a One, and to save $75. Simpson did so.
Volunteers Raise $508 In a Week.
By means of an energetic campaign
six members of the Volunteers of Amer
ica raised no leas than 1508 for the
benefit of the Maud B. Booth Home for
Working Girls. 11 East Seventh street
during the past week. The money was
raised by selling roses in the streets.

BONIFACE OUSTS OFFICER
"Moral Squad" Policeman Tells the
Court He Was Assaulted.
E. W. Jackson, proprietor of the
Jackson apartments In Union avenue,
yesterday appeared In Municipal Court
to answer a charge of assault and bat
tery upon Patrolman War die. a mem
ber of the "moral squad." Tha officer,
in quest of immorality, was summarily
ejected from Jackson's house, and re
taliated with a warrant, which he
served himself.
Jackson says he resented a charge
made by the officer that Mrs. Jackson
was protecting an Immoral person in
the apartments. "I pushed him out.
Your Honor, said the defendant, "but
I didn't use force enough to break an
egg. I told him to come with proper
papers and ha could get anyone in the
house."
Special -Officer -Coleman, a brother -of
Mrs. Jackson, said Wardle used' bad
language. Both say they will have the
case before the Police Commissioners.
The court found Jackson guilty of
technical assault, but suspended his
sentence. This was the first case in
several years in which an officer haa
been permitted to file a charge of as
sault and battery with himself aa the
injured party.
Directors May Purchase Site.
MILWAUKEE. Or, June 10. (Spe
cial.) J. W. Grasle, who was re-elected
a member of the board of directors by
a vote of 3 to 1. said this morning
that he considers the vote an Indorse
ment of the purposes of the. directors
in the selection of the two-acre site for
a central high school, and that the
purchase will be completed in due time.
At present there is pending a restrain
ing order which prevents the board
from acting, but so far there has been
no hearing In -the oourt.
WIFE OF THIEF COLLAPSES
Mother and Baby Cause Commotion
' In Municipal Court.
A swooning wife, a crying baby-and
a . shame-laced husband-thief caused
commotion In Municipal Court yester
day when the court and District At
torney refused to extend clemency to
W. M. Tittus, who admitted carrying
away every portable piece of furniture
from a house in Woodlawn.
While Mrs. O. J. McNamara, 1181
East Twenty-fifth street North, was
kept from home by the serious illness
ot her baby, Tittus went to the plaoe,
smashed in the doors and carried away
on his back the furnishings, even to a
sewing machine and lounge. He was
caught by Detectives Vaughn and
Litherland, who lay in the grass await
ing his return for more loot.
When -tha-oaae- was called the -a-aung
wife, holding her child, was In the
courtroom. She became hysterical and
when Bailiff Padrick started to lead
her out she fell unconscious. The baby,
in the arms of another woman, set up
a wail, and Tittus placed hlB head on
his arms and sobbed. He was held to
answer to the grand jury.
