Webster, damaged by fire two weeks ago. will pay the face value of the policy, 16000. The actual damage to the ferry was, according to Auditor Martin, about 17000 and the county will thus be out about 12000. Club Purchases Old Scnoot-HousE. The First Presbyterian Church has almost completed Its new church house for the accommodation of the Increas ing Sunday school of that organisation. For soma time the smaller members of the school have been meeting In the basement. But soon the brightest and airiest rooms In the new building will be for their use. A unique feature of the primary department room will be a frlexe of pictures, copies of the famoua paintings of the "Life of Christ." These will run entirely around the room, at a height easily to be seen by the little people. Btereoptlcon slides of these pictures have been made, and at 1:16 next Monday evening the pastor of the church. Dr. John H. Boyd, will deliver a lecture on the "Life of Christ." using these slides as Illustrations of the subject. The public Is -invited. Humamr Society Is Active. As shown by the monthly report of the Oregon Humane Society 417 horses and mules were examined In the month of May. Of these 13 were ordered taken off duty, as unlit for work. Five horses were destroyed. In the same period 17 cows were examined, four of them being found In bad condition and one ordered deatroyed. Twenty-nine dogs were disposed of and 176 cata aheltered. Four arrests were made for cruelty to animals; three convictions were se cured and two fined. By the use of the new sand machine 632 blocks have been sprinkled with- sand, which haa been found advantageoua to automo biles as well as horses. The society is making a special effort, to stop the shooting of song birds. The officers of the society are now located at 176 Madiaon street, near the Hawthorne bridge. Garden Contest Narrows Down. Working while other people were watching the parade yejaterday after noon, the Judgea In the acnool garrten contest have narrowed the selection down to 10 gardens, out of a total entry of 206. All but sis districts have now been visited, and by the time Profes sor A. G. B. Bouquet, one of the offi cial arbitera, baa returned from Cor vallls, Thursday night, every thing will be in readiness for making tha final Inspection of the leading doseu Friday morning. The awards will be decided In the afternoon. In the opinion of one of the Judges, two of the finest gardens were discovered yes terday afternoon. Wolf, of Qulniault, Wash., Is the owner of a piece of fir wood that closely resembles a sea gull. The wood Is part of a stump dug up o the homestead of John Bunch, near Qulniault about a year ago. The gnarled wood gives the appearance of plumage at a dlatance. The eye socket Is also indicated in the proper position. "Sake" Fourth Committer to Meet. Plans for the Masonic home are Im mature and not even an estimate of the probable cost can be given, but the lodge Is working steadily to raise a basic fund which can be relied upon when the time to build comes. POLICE NAB PICKPOCKET Dan Daly, Failing to Recognise Two Detectives, Gets BO Days. Dan Daly, alias Bums, a "dip," owes his arrest and a prison sentence of (0 days, which he drew yesterday, to his Inability to distinguish between an ordinary cltlxen and a police detective. He was arrested Monday by Detec tives Moloney and Swennes. The offi cers were seated on a bench beside the Clarke Hotel when the man came out, They Immediately recognised him aa a pickpocket, and watched his move ments. After "stalling" about for a few mlnutea, evidently with an eye for a victlmi he sat down on the bench be side the two detectives. "Hello. Dan." called Moloney after Daly had aeated hlmaelf.
