that neither Taft nor Roosevdlt will
b nominated, but a compromise, prob
ably Justice Hughes, may b the ulti
mate aolutlon. the Democrata are be
coming alarmed. Tha nomination of
such a man as Hughes would reunite
the warring Republican factions; he
would have the support of both the
Itnnsevelt and .the Taft factions, and,
being on of th ableat campalgnera In
th Republican party, would make a
campaign the equal of that which could
be put up by any one of the Democratic
possibilities. A reunited party Is some
thing the Democrata did not figure on,
and with one In prospect they are paus
ing to take their bearings.

are fearful that Colonel Rooaevelt may
be nominated at Chicago, and they do
not like that. Not a few Democrata In
private conversation express the fear
that Rooaevelt would cut Into the Dem
ocratic party and get support from th

would not have the full support of Taft
republicans, but they feel that with
Rooaevelt the Republican nominee,
there would be lees knifing In the Re
publican party than If Taft should be
named at Chicago. They believe the
Taft men are better party men than
the followers of Rooaevelt.

cuted 17 parasite and disorderly wo

making any reference to any particu
lar Individual, th Mayor declared
that th result of these arrest and
prosecutions bare been. In many caaea,

posed, which, he polnte out, are Inef
fective. Criticism of the polio department by
the county grand Jury for May, In th
form of a letter to th Chief of Polloa,
brought about a tabulated statement of
arrests and prosecutions, wtth the

disorderly women and men said to live
from their earnings to the extent of

prison on the old evidence, having paid
the full penalty meted out by the court
