ES AT THE TOP
Further Advance Not Expected
by Dealers.
MARKET IS VERY STRONG
No Prospect of Decline Soon, Owing
to the Scarcity of Supplies.
Packer Illdn fcltnation
In the East.
Th hid market I eery strong. At ths
latest advanc lo 11 4 a 114 Hull, It re

there Is no reason to fear a decline from
Hit. level aoon. oelne lo the scarcity of
Mrtes. It Is probable the current quotation
will prevail (or a conaiderable time at.
There la no .peculation la the market.
Neither tanners nor dealer are amblln
on th tutor, believing- that price will not
MO hither. While th tanners are retualof
to contract ahead, their hand-to-mouth
Burins is sufficient to keep all markets
wall cleared of etocka.
Th hide sow com In t la r short
haired and of good quality, and will con
tinue so antll Winter.
Condition la th Eaatera marret are
hewn by th latest mill advices to be as
follows:
Nothing- appsrently see ma to cheek th
teafltly advancing market on hides, espe
cially packer varieties, and weekly Increases
In rate hav been a common occurrence
tor some tlm past. Bom furthar advance
have been registered In th packer mar
ket this week, but ther la a suspicion on
the part of regular buyers that some 1st
ales at hl(h rates hav savored somewhat
ut manipulation or spsculatlon. The pack
on are now operating so many tanneries
of their own that II Is often difficult to
distinguish between legttimat sales to reg
ular tanners and bookings by packera to
raw stat I aot actually mad and th
transactlna does aot really occur until th
flnl.hed leather la disposed of some months
later. In lln with this som sale have
been reported of packer natlv steers of
lats May salting at ITS, and ther Is a
report of on car of lat June native
steers selling ahead at 17 c. The entire
market, however, is undoubtedly In an ex
tremely strong position.
"Th chief feature of th packer mar
ket of lal has been another upward epurt
In prices on spready native steers, which
sr. need for automobile and carriage
leather. On Chicago packer contracted
these spready hides ahead from June 1 to
th nd of th year at the record-breaking
prtre of 1lc. and a Mew York packer made
a almllar sale of cut-throat spreadles at
30a Another New Turk packer sold April
and May spread! at lSc. and a Chicago
packer declined lc for March, April and
May salting, holding thera at 2tc while
about all the Chicago packers who hav
aot contracted ahead ar asking xso to sell
from Jun to January.
aTh different varieties of packer brand
ed bides, as well as native cows and bulls,
ar unchanged, and th total sales of all
kinds war considerably less than th week
previous. Country hides fall to reflect the
strength shown In the packer market and
hav advanced only Ho during the paet few
months. wblls packers during the earns
period have risen fully 2o and In some In
stances more."

Irreparable Damage Done in

WHEAT MARKET SOARING
Closlno; Pricea at Chicago Show Two-
Cent Gain Weather Korrvasta

Afflicted Sex-lions.
CHICAGO. Jun 3. Irreparable damage
said to hav been Inflicted on wheat In
Kansas and Nebraska, sent the price today
to a hlsher level. It was declared by ex
perta that the recent rainfall had been
Inaufrtcient oer a large portion of the two
state., and that moisture now for such
districts would be without avail. The eloee
aaa firm, within a ahade of the top figures
reached. 1 14 o lo net advance. Com fin
ished tesc to Sc up, oats with a gain
of So to l.fi and provialon dearer by 27 He

What had the moat bullish effect on the
wheat market was a prediction that. In con
sequence of the alleged damage In th West,
th next Government crop report would
show a radical falling off In th figure
telling th condition. Except during a brief
interval at the outset, ther was energetic
covering by shorts.
First news regarding th inadequacy of
th rain cam from Kanaa. and soon had
quotatlona moving rapidly upward. Advices.
however, which arrtved later from Nebraska,
proved even more sensational. Showers
there had been lighter, and th damage
reported m ore severe.
Wheat trader her war Influenced by
the fact that markets near the acene of
damage displayed a tendency to lead In
the price advance. Moreover, the weather
forecast held out no hope of rain, o that
th outlook byond th lnjurd area agala
was considered crltlcaL
Long corn holdings wer let go e-ly by
wesk owners. Fin weather furnished th
Incentive. Then the market began to har
den tn sympathy with the wheat strength,
smaller eborta covering quite briskly at
times.
Active shipping demand upheld osts at a
sharp advance. The flee waa due, kowvr.
to th bullish action of other grain.
Provisions worked higher all around, be-
cauae of lively buying. In which a big pack
ing concern waa conspicuous.
