It was a case of too much Fullerton at Vaughn-Street Park yesterday aft ernoon, the twlrlcr who was pounded from the hill on Monday coming back so strong that the Potlatch Bugs won. 1-1, shoving the Colts to fourth place by virtue of a series of three straight victories over the Portlandera. However, while Fullerton pitched a magnificent game, holding the Colta to five hits, only two of which were of the slmon pure brand, Colt misplays were largely responsible for their third consecutive defeat. Had Eastley had the support ac corded Jack Barry'a mounaman the summary would have read 1-0 in favor of Portland. H coring All Karly. The work of the opposing slabsters was so effective that the scoring of the game was limited to the first two Innings, with the Seattle runs of the non-earned variety. The margin of hits was one in Fullerton' favor, with the strikeouts even, four each, and Kastley walking only one batter against three passes charged to his liug oppo nent. The tussle was an Interesting one. with the Colts invading the paths just often enough to keep the tension at a high pitch, with promises of runs which would tie up the game or return ttat-m winners. Several times men reached second, where a elngle would have evened the score, but Fullerton was In vincible when that quality spelled sur cess, and prospective rallies were nipped in the bud. Mensor's Great Speed Counts. In the very first inning Eddie Mon sor, speed marvel of the circuit, beat out a bit to short, was sacrificed to second, stole third, and scored on Fries' intield out- When the Bugs came to bat Weed singled past Coltrln. Barry attempted to sacrifice, but was safe at first when Kastley Juggled the bull and finally hit the runner In a ninth-hour effort to retire Manager Jack. Chick slammed out at Jlonsor. who suffered a momen tary disconnection of mental machinery and tossed the runner out at first, when he had Barry at second by the pro verbial mile, snd a double play was imminent. McMullIn then drove one towards Strait, scoring Weed. The outfielder returned the ball to Kastley. Hurry pulling up at third. The pitcher shot the sphere to Mensor In sn effort to nip the oncoming McMullIn. but Kddle let It trickle through his fingers, and Barry scored with what turned out to be the deciding run of the game. Colts Often Dasgeross. In the seventh, eighth and ninth the Colts loomed up on the scoring norlxon but failed to make the circuit. In the seventh Strult walked, wss sacrificed to second and went to third on Kibble hit to Chick, but by that time two men were gone and Coltrin failed to come through with the pinch wallop. In the eighth Mensor doubled down third base line, but failed to go farther than the base hit entitled him to. In the ninth Williams took first on McMullln'e bad peg. the only Seattle mlscue of the game, and took second on Harris' In field out. With two gone Otto Moore was shoved In to bat for Kibble, but grounded out to Barry. In the ninth Inning the Bugs were twice nipped at the plnte. Weed, the first man up, walked. Barry attempted to sacrifice. M-nsor dropping Eastiey's toss, and the runners advancing a base in the melee. Chick drove one to Men sor. who forced Weed at the plate, and Barry succumbed a moment later when McMullIn failed to bunt the ball on a squeexe signal. SLUMP OF TEAM WORRIES Evrliig and Ish Stir Deader to Use Every Effort to Strengthen. Men Fall to Hit and Ex cuses Are Exhausted. BV HARRY B. SMITH. SAN" FRANXISCO, May 16. (Special.) With the Seals playing losing ball, steadily sliding dow n the percentage column: with the knockers busy and the attendance falling oS, coupled with the failure of the owners of the club to land talent that would brace the ciub, it's no wonder that J. Cal Ewing. Frank Ish and Dan Long are stewing around, catching at straws to save the situation. Of all the men connected with the local club. Dan Long is probably the most worried. It is generally under stood that Dan is on probation as man ager this year. He must produce a winner, or a near-winner, or he will give way to another leader. Long has not been successful the past few sea sons and he has exhausted the excuse book. Itesnlts Only to Count. Results only will now count with Messrs. Ish and Ewing. and, judging the Seals on their performance in the first six weeks f the season and com paring them with the other teams In the circuit, a miracle will be wrought If they produce the results that will keep Dan on the Job. They need to be strengthened and ail effort is being made In that direction. But that's a hard thing to do. A thou sand other teams are also trying to strengthen, and there Is not enough good talent to go round. What's the rriatter with the Seals? All summed up. the answer is, "They aren't there." They are not hitting. At first It was explained they Had nara luck In their hitting and drove the ball into the handas of the opposing pitcher. Well, a great batter once defined the se cret of batting- as "hitting 'em where they ain't." The Seals may be hard luck, hitters, but it looks rather that they are weak hitters. All the other teams occasionally come through witn one of those Inspiring old-time hitting bees. But never the Seals. They haven't a regular player hitting In the .300 class. Team's Fielding Fair. In the inatti;r of fielding the team compares pretty well with the other teams. A good defense keeps the other slile from winning, but '.t requires also a good att.tr-k to get enough runs to win for vour side. In baserunning the team Is inferior to all others in the league, for the very good reason that there are but one or two even fairly fleet run ners on the team. Furthermore, the Seals don't play the game like winners, nor make the most of their chances. They lack dash and spirit and a leader to Instil this Into them. -They work like hired help. In a sort of that's-enough-for-me-today manner. There lies the biggest fault. Those qualities that make a winner which now are lacking in the San Fran cisco team mav be gained later in the season, but It's doubtful. Class tells and the class don't appear to be there.
