Piatt, a prominent Port land attorney. The couple mill be arraigned In Justice Court today to answer to a charge of larceny preferred t.y Mr. Hansen. Horns see- Marts Car. The two first met on a Fulton car .Monday. April 2:. The young woman was returning to the home of soma l-wplo with whom she was living be ound the end of the Fultor rarllne In South Portland. A flirtation started n the car. They got off at the same place and actual acquaintanceship was soon formed. They found their way to Mr. Piatt's trimmer home and occupied It for the next three nights. Thursday tue scheme to elope "for keeps" was formed, and the theft of the horse and huggy from the sexton of the cemetery followed late that night. They started on the road towards llcMlnnvllle. driv ing the greater part of tha night. The irare was unshod nnd proceeded with d:ff!culty. The Sheriffs office In Port land was notified on Friday, and heel marks on the graves In the cemetery revealed the fact that there was a woman In te case. Notices were tele phoned to peace officers all around to w.tch for a couple with a black mare and a buggy the rubber tlrea of which were badly worn. The two went first to McMlnnvllle and then toward Salem. They crossed to the east side of the river at Salem and came ba-k through Portland and oown to Llnnton. where Sadler pledged the horse for JJ.50. promising to return and claim the animal In a few days. The rest of the distance to Rainier was covered by train, the money aecureil In l.lnnton being used to purchase tickets. Pv this time tramp life had palled on t'ie pair, and a decision had been reached that the girl should return to her parents. Her 3-year-old child, the product of her marriage to the hus rar.d from whom she has been for some time living' apart, was with her mother. Ma rv a I lea Ms res Them. Purine their trip across the country, the girl said, they slept In haystacks and bams, and once took a set of har ness belonging to a woman who haJ given them the privilege of her barn. They were followed and forced to re turn it. Some places they said they were eloping and were to be married. At other places they said they were husband and wife. Often they were Invited to eat by hospitable farmers" wives, but on one occasion were so hungry that they stole a chicken and i coked It as best th- could, eating it half raw and with only one slice of bread between them as accompani ment. The young woman declares that her companion once wanted to steal a horse to replace the one they had. wnlch wa ahout worn out. but that she protested and dissuaded him after the animal had actually been captured In a lature. Wan and bedraggled they presented a pitiable spectacle In the County Jail jesterdny. That they repent their escapade there Is no doubt. It Is be Meved that thev have learned a valu able lesson, and It Is anticipated that, even If thev are convicted for the lar ceny of the horse and buggy, which svma probuble. as they frankly admit the theft, pressure may be brought to hear to secure paroles Tor them.
