An active campaign lias been car ried on by the Portland Commercial Club In favor of Mr. Lively. The move ment was first begun at a club banquet last Fall. Mr. Lively was attracted to tne Pacific Coast by the wonderful possibilities for developing; the live stock industry of the Pacific North wesf. Mr. IJvely came to Portland with the Intention of engaging In the bust nea for himself, but shortly follow ing his arrival he accepted a position 3i general srnt for the Portland Union Stovkyards Company. He was later pro nioted to the important position he now holds, that of general manaxer for the same company. As general manager for this com pany. Mr. Lively has been a. tireless and enthusiastic worker In the develop ment of the livestock industry. Trace able largely to his work is the fact that tfie livestock business of the Pacific Northwest has assumed the enormous proportions it now represents. His energies have been In part alocg edu rational lines, stock shows and live stork demonstration trains In agricul tural districts. At the same time he has been an extensive contributor to livestock magaxlnes and other period lea Is. He has also contributed valuable articles for literature which has been widely distributed by the railroads. Among bis contributions on the subject of livestock was one recently on 'Hoa-s." which received wide circula tion among the farmers and did Its part toward Increasing the production f swine and other livestock, until the market today is largely supplied by the farmers of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. IJvely also Is one of Portland's foremost public-spirited citizens. H Is an active member of the various commercial organliatlnns of this city and a supporter of all civic Improve rrents. That the United Steel Corporation failed to earn Its dividends on the preferred and com mon shares for the first three months of this year by more than 86.000.000 was disclosed today at the quarterly meeting of the directors. Earnings amounted to 317,8:6,973. Af ter making the. usual allowance for depreciation and other regular fixed charges, including the sinking fund, earnings were reduced to 312.108.41S. Further deduction of ti.741.S4!), rep resenting Interest for the quarter on the outstanding Issues, reduced dividends to 36.366.566. Inasmuch as 313.658. 700 was necessary to meet dividend requirements on the preferred and com mon shares, a deficit of 36.232,134 was created. In the language of the of ficial statement, this was "provided from the undivided surplus on Decem ber 31. 1911." Today's meeting was largely attend ed and unusually prolonged. As estimated last night, the business In the stamp department of the Postoffice amounted to 394.413. 18. For the same month last year the receipts reached a total of 881,312.41. The gain Is $13. 200.84. or 16.25 per cenK When the final figures are compiled. It is ex pected that the months receipts will make a still better showing. The total sales of postage since January 1 amount 3355.776. as compared wltn 3J..si for the first four months of last year. The increase Is nearly 329,000. or 8 per cent. The postal savings bank Is also making a remarkable growth, the total deposits being approximately 34aO,000 Real Estate Showing Good. The real estate situation during the month continued satisfactory. Most of he trading was centered in small par cels and residence property, although several substantial sales of business property were closed. There are many Inquiries from outside sources for Port land investments and dealers are san guine over the prospects of an active market this month. A satisfactory showing was made in grain and flour shipments, while the month's business in lumber shipping was much larger than for the , same month of last year. The foreign and coastwise orders amounted to nearly 3.000.000 feet. Flour exports amounted to 49,000 bar rels, compared with -3,575 barrels in April of last year. To California there were dispatched 35.319. compared with 5.634 barrels In April. 1911. Of 542. 8I3 bushels of wheat sent from this port. 24.599 bushels went to Europe, 260,251 to Callforina and 58,033 to Mexico. Stockyards Halaare Maintained. Receipts at the Portland Union Stock yards In April showed a small increase ver the business for the same month last year.
