Wheelwright and E. iV. Wright Say Rebates to Americans Would Be Vnfalr. W, D. Wheelwright chairman of the day at the Ad Club luncheon yesterday, and E. W. Wright, speaking upon the movement for free tolls or rebates for American ahlpa through the Panama Canal, declared that such action on tb. part of the Government would be. In effect, a breach of treaty with Great Britain and would react upon this coun try to drive It Into a position of com mercial Isolation from the other coun tries of ths world. Mr. Wheelwright touched upon the Indignation expressed by tha press of England against tha attitude of the Americans favoring free tolls tor our own ships, and said that th. United States cannot afford to lay Itself open to such charges. The whole matter, he declared, was one of National moral ity. "The completion of the Panama Canal." said Mr. Wright, "wlli change the. commercial map of the world. In order to profit, however, to the fullest extent this country must take Imme diate steps to repeal old laws end enact new ones that will provlda us with proper facilities for securing our shars of the Increased traffic passing- between the world's greatest oceans." This, he held, could be accomplished neither by ship Subsidy nor by grant ing free tolls or rebates. He advocated placing Americans on equal footing with foreign peoples in buying ships and chartering them under the Ameri can flag. "If we are to enter the race, let us do It with something better than lum ber droghers." he said. "Let us buy ships on even terms with the foreign ers, and then, when the lumber busi ness Is slack, w. can aand them out Into the world wherever business of fers, without being under the fearful handicap which protection of our In fant Industries now pieces on Amerl-can-bullt ships." "Let us remember that the canal Is being built not for a select few ship owners, but for millions of producers and consumers.- Keep it open to all who will carry freight through it. at reasonable rates. Wipe out your an cient navigation laws and enact new ones to fit the emergency. Then if the shipowners don't make satisfactory rates, get together and buy your ships In the market where they are sold at the lowest price." . Major J. J. Morrow, Vnited States Corps of Engineers, gave a talk on the physical features of the Panama Canal, which was Illustrated by atereoptlcon slides furnished by Lv M. Lepper. Mr. Morrow haa Just returned from a trip to Panama and with the - assistance of the excellent Illustrations was able to set before the clubmen In an Inter esting manner the extent of the work that has been carried on in the canal sone.' TWO SOCIETIES MERGED STATE MISSIONARY ORGANIZA TION ABANDONED. At Recent Meeting Decision Is Reached to Adopt New Plan to Carry on Work. Merger of the Women's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society of Oregon with the Women's Baptist Foreign Mis sionary Society of tne Pacific Coast was effected Tuesday at the meeting of the former society at the University Park Baptist Church. Mrs. M. U Drlggs pre sided, and the most important business transacted was the abandoning of the state organization and union with the society of the Pacific Coast. This ac tion was taken in the Interest of econ omy of time and expense. Also it was voted to turn over to the Pacific Coast Society all the funds of the state so ciety, including the memorial fund, but the Interest Mill will be used for the work In Oregon. The programme Included an address by Miss Ruby Wayburn. of Chicago, Pacific Coast missionary worker among the women of the Pacific Coast. Ber address covered the work of women and girls. Talks were made by others on literature and children's depart ment. It was voted to merge the work among children directly Into ths Sun day school department. This action was taken to do away with so much organization, which one speaker said was confusing and occasioned great loss of time without compensating gain. It was announced that the annual meeting of the Willamette Baptist As sociation will be held April 10. 11 and 12 in the Third Baptist Church, Van couver avenue and Knott street, and that the women will make a special exhibit of their work during the ses sions of the association. A room will be devoted to that purpose in the church. Rapture Can Be Cured. My mechanical treatment will cure rupture. Consultation free. B. C. Llns trum. 263 Yamhill St., Portland. Or.
