Federation of Labor for the third suc
cessive term. In the same election. R.
O. Rector, also of this city and a prom
inent member of the Building Trades
Council, was chosen vice-president. Kd

elected secretary-treasurer of the State
Federation.

New Grape Varieties to Be Tried.

(Special.) The Agricultural Depart
ment at Washington has sent G. L.
Aggers, of this place, six of each of
If varieties of grapes to plant on the
bluff side of his property overlooking
the Columbia River. Mr. Aggers has
varieties which have never been plant
ed In the West and ha hopes by the ex
periment to find one or two which will
prove of great commercial value for
this section.
EDUCATION TO BE TOPIC
Conference at Salem to Consider
Workings of New System.
Representatives of organised labor,
the State Grange, various state educa
tional Institutions, Governor West and
other state officials Interested In the
educational system of the state will
hold a conference at Salem April 2 for
the "mutual discussion and promotion
of closer acquaintance and co-operation
for the common good under the Oregon
system."
At this conference, the educational
needs of the state will be discussed and
thoroughly considered, including the
referendum, which was called on the
appropriations of the last Legislature
for improvements at the University of
Oregon.
Organised labor at its recent annual
meeting at The Dalles authorized the
appointment of a committee of three
members to attend this conference. The
members of the committee appointed by
W. H. Daly, president of the State Fed
eration of Labor, are; R. A, Harris, of
Salem; William A. Marshall and Ed. J.
Stack, of this city. Aside from tha
state officials and members of organ
ised labor, representatives from the fol
lowing organisations or institutions are
expected to be in attendance: State
Grange. State Teachers' Association,
Oregon-Southern Idaho Farmers' Union,
University of Oregon, Oregon Agricul
tural College and the Monmouth State
Normal School.

Montesano Constable Suffers Injury
as He Seeks Suit Defendant.
MONTESANO, Wash.. March. 22..
(Special.) Cy Fenwick, Constable,
sustained a broken leg in one of the
logging camps In the North River dis
trict, 17 miles south of Montesano, to
day, when struck with a line. He was
going to serve papers on a defendant
in a suit and was told that ha could
take a short cut oaer a log chute. When
in the chute tha yarder started and he
was unable to escape, owing to the
steep bank on both sides.
Fenwick was shot three times
through the body several years ago by
Yourex. who murdered Chief of Police
Smith, of Cosmopolis, at the same time.
