Ths stork mar ket today made considerable recovery from Its unsettled condition of lsst Saturdsy. when priors fell on fears of political and Industrial dlsturhancea abroad. Much ef the strength sod activity con verged about stocks that n-aver have ex ercised great Influence as market tacioi. These Included Erie. Missouri Pacific and American Can preferred. ?orae l.lea may be gained of the anomalous movements of the session from the fact .that until 3 o'clock Erie common was the most active stock. Its sales being greater than those of anv other Issue. Missouri Pacific was more active than Tnlon Pacific and the dealings in the Can shares were much larger than in stock whose course often had been accepted as significant. The foreign situation seemed to offer some warrant for last week's rumors which went so far as to "threaten the peace of Europe." - The market took on its strongest tone in the final hour. Western traffic condi tions are Improving. One of the most hopeful features respecting that section Is to be found In the steady piling up of bank .1.. . 1 eeerva renters. Indicating tlat a large part of the usual drain 011 this . renter for crop-moving requirements will f be obviated. Increasing demand for cash In the West Is reflected In the steadiness of Its money markets. . The Controller of the Currency has com- pleted his abstract of reports, showing the condition of over 7300 banks at the close : of business February 22 last. The increase In surplus over the last previous date Is almost 121.000.000, wltn a very crease In reserves. Sales by London here todsy were about 20 000 shsres. chiefly Steel and Tnlon Pa cific. London got the bulk of the South African gold delivered there. The Imperial Bank of Germany reported a gain of '"nit 4. 000 08 In gold with an increase of 17. 500.000 In cash deposits Increased by $21. 000. 000. I-lveriKKl Stocks Reduced lo One Million Bushels. CHICAGO. March IS. Two bogles, today frightened short sellers of wheat, the coal strike threatening to interfere with grain supplies at Liverpool being one. The n" was a rumor that a naval clash might close the Dardanelles. In conseuuence the market closed firm atJitiSc to tc ad- Reductions In stock, leaving only 1.000. 000 bushels of wheat on hand at Liver pool, had an immediate bullish efTcct in Chicago. The fact that Minneapolis anjt Duluth receipts were heavy led to a quick drop in prices here, but strong interests took the buvlng side and forced an up turn. The advance was helped by world s shipments being much less than at the corresponding time a year ago. Including farm reserves, the amount of wheal in all positions In this country was estimated to be 25.000.000 bushels under the figures a year ago. Fine weather made the com market easy st first, but it afterwards developed that Influential local buying had cleaned up all the pit surplus for sale. Although improving prospects for farm work led to' aggressive selling of oats, the marker tightened later in view of the strength of other grain. A better cash demand for meats fur nished ground for an advance In the pro vision market. The list displayed little tendencv to .lag. and the close was about the topmost figure all round.
