Struck by a Southern Pacific pas senger train at East hirst street and Hawthorne avenue as he was attempt ing to cross tn front of It yesterday afternoon. Amos Shockley. a Portland pioneer and a communicant at Taylor- Street Methodist Church, died at uoofl Samaritan Hospital two and one-half hours after the accident. Both of hla less had been severed by the locomo tive. According to witnesses Mr. Shockley was walking east on the north side of Hawthorne avenue when the gates were lowered across the streets to stop traf fic for the paasage of Roseburg local No. 17. which was leaving the city. Mr. Shockley. they say. waa evidently in a hurry and ran under the bars. Members of the train crew saw the move of the old man aud made efforts to bring their train to a step, but were unsuccessful. They say that the train was proceeding slowly. It traveled about an engine's length after the oc currence. Speak t) Paster. Die. The Red Cross ambulance was Im mediately called and he was hurried to the Good Samaritan Hospital. While he waa being lifted Into the ambulance he called for Rev. Benjamin Young, his pastor, then lapsed Into unconscious ness. No one knew his Identity at the time, and hla name was learned at the hospital from a notebook that he car ried. The fact that he had mentioned the name of Dr. Young led the South ern Pacific officials to send for the nastor and he arrived In a short time. whn lie v niinF arrived he was rec onised hv Mr. Shockley. who greeted him savins:: "Dr. Young: Why. bless your soul!"
