In the Interests of the develoment ot
trade between Australia and the United
States, Nlel Nlelson, member of parlla
ment from New South Wales and for
merly Immigration and Land Commit
sloner of that state, was In Portland
yesterday In the course of a visit to
the United States as a special delegate
from his government.
At the weekly luncheon of the Pro
gresslve Business Men's Club at the
Portland Hotel yesterday noon Mr. Nlel
son addressed the members, and tola
cf the measures of his government for
building up a greater commerce be
tween Australia and the United States.
Before he leaves the United States It
la the purpose of Mr. Nlelson to estab
lish In behalf of his government, agen
cles in all the Important Pacific Coast
cities. Including San Francisco. Fort
land, Tacoma and Seattle, to look after
tha interests of Australian commerce.
Mr. Nlelson has already established
an office In San Francisco, and has ar
ranged for the establishment of a
line of three steamships between San
Francisco and Australia. The vessels
will run out of Sidney and wlllvglve a
30-day mall service between San Fran
cisco and that port.
It will be the duty of the agencies
that the Australian government pro
poses to establish In the Pacific Coast
cities, to pave the way for new chan
nels of trade between Australia and the
Paclflc Coast, looking to the ultimate
establishment of steamship lines to
those cities also.
"Both countries would be benefited by
an Interchange of commerce." said Mr.
Nlelson. Take for example wood.
Australia Is rich In hardwoods such as
are used In making the best furniture.
This Is not so abundant In the United
States, while on theother hand the
United States abounds In fir and soft
woods which Australia would be glad
to buy."
Mr. Nlelson laid particular stress on
the supply of coaL .
"We have an Inexhaustible supply
right at tide water." he said. "It Is
of the most desirable grade and Is only
S per cent ash. This coal can be mined,
shipped and unloaded on the docks on
the Paclflc Coast at a cost of $4.60 a
ton."
Mr. Nlelson made a plea for the aboli
tion of the law prohibiting foreign bot
toms from carrying freight between
American ports and said It was part
of his mission In this country to present
the subject before Congress. This
would enable Australian vessels t6 ship
coal to Pago Pago, a new United States
coaling station nine days out from
Australia, as well as to Hawaii, and to
complete the trip to their objective
ports with full cargoes.
It is also part of Mr. Nlelson's mis
sion to study Irrigation. The govern
ment of New South Wales recently
bought 3.000.000 acres of land, and has
a sufficient water supply to Irrigate the
entire area, but Is now trying to solve
the problem of distributing the water.
