YOUNG, MOTHER IS FOUND Police Suspicion Aroused Because Hon Is Left Vacant. ' Ktnel Smith, a young unmarried mother, who haa been missing from her home at Forty-second street and Klllingsworth avenue since New Tear's day. was found yesterday at the home of Mrs. J. W. Barrett, In Kenton, where sh haa been staying. Mrs. Barrett has been earing for tha girl's -monthe-old child while Its mother haa gone out to find work. T.e woman's sudden disappearance a few days ago. under extremely auspicious olreumstances. was under Investigation by the city detectives last night. A partly-used bottle of chloroform was discovered In the house formerly tenanted by tha Kirl and her mother. The development of the mystery came through the discovery by Patrol man Burstow Sunday that a horse, dog and clilckena bad been locked In a room of the house at Korty-second street and Kllllngsworth avenue, and abandoned to cold and starvation. The officer cared for the neglrcled animals and began In-julrlre which led to the discovery of the chloroform bottle and the other facts linked with It. Mrs- G. K. Uennett. a neighbor, told the detective that she went to the house about o'clock New Tear'o morning. On the way she met Mrs. Smith coming away, and this waa the last time she was seen. In the house were found Ethel Stn'tn, her baby and Walter William. her constant com panion. That same evening she was st the house again and the adults were there hut the child was gone. WRITER RAPS PHYSICIANS .Medical rrredom Advocate Kou-rtl hy Cliiim of lotors. PORTLAND. Jan. T. I To the Editor.) A local evening paper. In Its last Sun day edition, reprints from tho Journal of the American Medical Association an article abn'it the Canal Zone, in which, with a modesty characteristic of a certain r'.ass of "political doctors." mention I" made of the "almost tnrred !Me result of trained scientific effort to control disease." and aiso of the dense stupidity" of the people In gen eral who do not give sufficient glory to tnese modest doctors. Incidentally a few kicks are administered to tha Na tional League for Medical Freedom. S-enator Works and the Christian Sclen-t-sts. Poor, dear "stupid" people, poor Senator Works and poor, poor Chris tian Scientists. The anu le goes Into details In show ing how tne Improved santtsry condi tions have ms.de the Canal Zone lea, thy. and then, with unmatched nonchalance, gives the doctors credit for this good work of tha sanitary en gineers and demands that the allopathic doctors be given a monopoly of heal ing The sanitary engineers do not com ria:n of t!ie "dense stupidity" of the people in not appreciating them: might t.-.e reason be that englnering Is built on scientific knom-ledce. and that their work speaks for lt-tif? The trouble seems to be that the people are losing confidence In tha doctors. This confidence cannot be re established by audacious demands for class legislation or by padded statistics. Speaking of statistics, a short time go It was stated from New York and given i ii w ium iM,,v.,.j ' w -lltlcal doctorsthat II children (names given) had died under Christian Science treatment In the United States during tho past II year. The official report I of the department ot neaua oi "r fof New York shows that In that city In 110. 17.111 cnnnren hmt e- i: of dlnhtherla alone. under medical treatment. What a vic tory for "medical science. else may be said of the political doc tors, they have no sense of humor, or else they would not have published the names of those 32 children who died during the last 11 years In the United states tinder Christian Science treat ment. . .... Another proof of the lack of the saving grace of humor on tha part of our medical frlenda Is that recently a Christian Science practitioner a woman) In St. Louis was. on tha Ini tiative of the doctors, arrested, dis robed and searched at tha police sta tion. Any ona acquainted with Chris tian Pcience practitioners knows how liable these desperate persona (especial ly the women) are to have dangerous weapons concealed about their persons, perhaps Gatllng sruns or maybe dyna- , w III all tne aociors unaw m.nt children died were to ba arrested it but let that pass. However, one wonders why tha "irregulars uo nwi do a little in the way of statistics themselves: what a wealth of material In mistaken diagnosis, stupid admin istration of drugs, etc. W heat- a great deal about vivisection: think ot the unnecessary and blundering opera tlona at the hospitals: here is vivisec tion with a vengeance. One of the reasons assigned by the American Medical Association why a National Department of Health ehould be established Is that such department would furnish "Information for the people." The National League for Medical Fredora la heartily In favor of furnishing Information for tha people. In fact that Is Its chief business. The Oregon branch of the league (one of the smallest) with Its many thousands of members, enrolled mora than 600 new members last month alone, all looking for Information. What does this sudden Interest In medical mat ters mean? It means that people are beginning to wake up to tha fact that the arrogant claim by ona achool of medicine to the possession of all scien tific knowledge about health la not of Itself a sufficient reason for granting such school a monopoly by establishing state medicine. The National Laasrue has served notice that not only will It resist further monopoly, but It will en deavor to break down tha monopoly al ready created. The time Is coming, and soon, when ,e M,Hlcin will hava to stand on Its merits; only In that way can real progress be made. ...... .a. . ... X'nrOQL'W Lnm3iiA.i V-- I 1. ... .... .
