SOLTHERX PAOITIO TO GIVE
SEED FREE TO FARMERS.
Aim Is to Make Product Serve Ore
gon as Livestock Feed as Corn
Docs Iowa,
To stimulate tha cultivation of field
barley In the Willamette Valley and
Western Oregon. Harvey EX Lounsbury,
general freight agent of the Southern
Pacific has arranged for the free dis
tribution of seed to the farmers In that
section. Ha has obtained a large sup
ply of seed barley, and will send it to
the farmers who advise him that they
will endeavor to engage In this indus
try. "I am advised by Dr. James Withy
combe, of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege.", said Mr. Lounsbury yesterday;
"that experiments have been ma.de
along the line of obtaining a feed bar
ley seed that is best suited for use in
the Willamette Valley and In Western
OTegon, and through experiments made
at the college a variety of seed has been
found that should produce SO bushels of
seed barley to the acre In Western Ore
gon. It is said that this feed barley
If grown extensively in Oregon will be
to Oregon as a stock feed what corn Is
to Iowa. When fed to dairy cattle with
hay or with kale it will make a balance
ration so that dairymen will not need
to buy bran and shorts. It will be a
splendid feed for fattening hogs, chick
ens and in fact all kinds of livestock.
"To Introduce this seed, the Southern
Pacific Company has decided, as an in
dustrial movement, to purchase a quan
tity of it and make distribution to
farmers along its lines who will under
take to plant one or two acres, so as
to make a practical demonstration of
what it will accomplish, the idea beng
to promote agriculture through induc
ing the farmers to grow feed barley ex
tensively as an economical feed for
livestock, which should Increase ma
terially the stockraislng business, poultry-raising
and dairying throughout
Western Oregon. I wish to invite the
farmers along onr lines in the Willam
ette Valley and In Southern Oregon who
are willing to put in one or two acres
of this seed to advise me, and steps will
be taken to supply them."
