Nlcldes gave a mortgage on his fix

mortgage and note were purchased by
the brewing company. Subsequently.
Nlckles says, he sought to pay off the
note, but Hlrsch Insisted that he pay
also $2500, the value of the license.
Nlckles further asserts that he was
arrested and taken to the Justice Court
by J. D. Mann, whom Judge Gatens ap
pointed receiver of the saloon. He was
acquitted by Justice of the Peace Bell
and declares that the charge against
him was false and malicious and pre
ferred for the purpose of Intimidating
him Into offering no further resist

CITY'S GROWTH IS MARKED
Figures of City Auditor Surprise
Even Most Sangnine.
A. L. Barbur, City Auditor, revealed
to the members of the Rotary Club at
luncheon Tuesday some facts and fig
ures about the growth of Portland In
the last five years that astonished even
those under whose eyes this growth
had been going on. Reduced to terms of
exact statistics, the story of develop
ment of the city appeared more mar
velous than could have been suggested
by the most flowery of general state
ments. In 1905 the total receipts in the Au
ditor's office, according to Mr. Barbur,
were 2,1 55,711.65, while the total of
the first 11 months of the present year
overshadows these figures with the
enormous sum of $13,726,992.09. Dis
bursements in 1905 amoutned to $1,990,
550.62 and In 1911 to $10,448,471.03.
"The' number of building permits Is
sued in 1905," said Mr. Barbur, was
2050. During the present year 7245
building permits have already been is
sued. Hard-surface pavement has in
creased from 18.2 miles to 22S.6 miles
and the cost of street improvement
this year has been $6,415, SOI, as com
pared to $468,840.23 in 1906.
The number of city employes has In
creased nearly thrice and the cost of
Bewers laid In the city this year was
about 12 times what it waa in 1905.
The number of places connected with
the water mains has increased more
than 100 per cent and there are now 26
fire stations in the city and seven more
contemplated, where there were but 18
five years ago.
