Report of th death of Captain G. W.
Williams In Alaska has been confirmed.
While on his way from Illamna to Ke
nai, on Cook Inlet, his sloop capsized.
When the boat was found and towed
ashore, lt was recognized as tha one
owned by Captain Williams. His body
was recovered recently and waa burled
on A. C. Point, Illamna Bay, whenee lt
cannot be removed until navigation re
opens In the Spring.
Captain Williams was out of the
originators of the fishwheels on the
Columbia River. Whern but 19 ha en
tered tha Army and served three years
in the Civil War. Among the battles In
which he engaged were Cedar Creek,
Babino Crossroads and tha Siege of
Vicksburg. After tho war he acted for
a number of years as Captain of a
militia company In Vinton, la., his home
town. .
Captain Williams was one of the un
fortunates who "went to the wall" in the
panic of 1893. For several years after
this disaster he struggled bravely, but
failure succeeded failure and he finally
decided to go to Alaska."
There he at first met with some suc
cess, but failure In the prosecution of
it, through no fault of his own, threw
him back in the ranks of the prospect
ors. He is survived only by his widow.
