(SpeclaL) That Representative Hawley la In favor of eliminating; all agricultural lands within the confines of tha National for ests, which can be cleared for use and the construction of homes thereon, is set out in a letter which he has Just directed to the Assistant Forester at Portland. In his letter he says: -inquiry das been made of me whether the order opening- to settle ment and entry lands In the National forests, which were withdrawn July 1( ikio, ana embracing, 1 understand, a large tract of land in the Crater and blaklyou National forests, would have any bearing: upon the Ashland National forest, I will appreciate your advice relative to this matter. "I am favorable to a policy eliminat ing all agricultural lands within the limits of our National forests which can be cleared and used for homes for the people who are dally coming to Oregon in search of a tract of land upon which to settle. I believe that there is much land of this character now embraced within the National for ests of Oregon, and I have constantly urged that all lands be carefully classi fied, and lands valuable for homestead purposes be segregated and thrown open to entry. I am glad to know that in many instances this is being done, and I believe that if the policy should be continued that it would mean much to the settlement and development of the State of Oregon. "My attention was attracted this morning to an article in The Oregonlun. including a photograph, demonstrating the productivity of soil within the Slus law National forest. The homesteader, Edgar, N. Melvin. shows what can be done in the way of agriculture on many a tract of land now withdrawn from entry. I annually receive many com munications from prospective settlers, similar to the Interview of Mr. Melvin, and believe that all such land asa he mentions should be thrown open to settlement by those hardy and worthy emigrants who are seeking homes in Oregon. "The case of the Ashland National forest Is different from the usual cases arising where settlers make applica tions to homestead tracts. This forest, I understand, protects the water supply of the City of Ashland, and any with drawal should not affect land whose settlement would result In contamina tion of the water supply of that city."
