I THE STORXIXG OREGONIA SATURDAY, yOTraiBER 4. 1911. 1 RAILROAD CHANGES GALORE IMMINENT Minor Appointments and Transfers to Follow Seg regation of Lines. TRAFFIC VACAMCIES TWO Portland Men Mar Win Both Places. Wricthcr Aids to Chiefs Will Bo Ximrd I fndccidedO.-VC. K. A X. DaUrt Cat. With tha segregation of the Southern Pacific lines In Oregon from the O.-W. R. 4k N. Co. and the appointment of John M. S-oit snd Harvey Lounsbury as nenerai pasaenger agent and g-eneril freifMt acnl respectively of the north ern district of the Southern I'acllc numerous changes imoOK minor offi cials are due to follow. Appointments are expected to be announced within the corn in ir week. The appointment of Mr. Scott and Mr. Loumburjr leave two vacancies In the traffic department of the O.-W. R. at N. Co.. bo:h of which. It l believed, will be tilled from the PorUand office. R. R Miller, traffio manager: William MrMurrajr. general pis.onger sgent. and Frank W. Robtnain. reneral freight stent, are absent Irora Portland with the demonstration train tourtna; Central Oregon. As soon as tbejr re turn they will confer with Mr. Scott and Mr. Lounebury with reference to the new organisation. Aide Sat Derided Yaan. It has not yet been determined whether assistants to Mr. MrMurray nd Mr. Hoblnson will be neoeesnry to replace Mr. rVott and Mr. Lou n-bury. InJer the old regime each depart ment handled the business of the Southern I'arine lines In OrecDO ss well as that of the O.-W. K. N. Co. The new arranrement relieves the O.-W. R. N. officials of those estra duties, but since the combination was effected, seven years ago. the O.-W. R. A N. system has crown to such sn extent that It now comprises over J00 miles of rails In a rich territory of trow ln Importance. That the freight or passenger business can Ions; be con ducted without an assistant In each department seems Improbable. For the position of assistant ren eral freight agent It Is probable that either James II. Mulchay. dlstrlrt freight and pa'senger scent In I ort land. or A. MacCorquouale. dlstrlrt freight and passenger agent at Spo kane, will be named. J. II. O'Neill. traveling; passenger scent, and A. C M.rtln. chief clerk In the passenger department, have been suggested for the vacancy existing; for assistant ireneral passenger agent. Jarladlrtleaa ta l-mw. It has been virtually determined to extend the Jurisdiction of both Mr. MrMurray and Mr. Kobtnson over the line between rVattle and Portland, but to retain J. 1. fklnner in cnarge or the office In that city with the title of assistant general freight and pas senger agent. Reports from Omaha yesterday were ta the effect that Mr. Hoblnson will be transferred to that city to take charge of freight traffic on the fnlon Pacific and that Mr. thinner will be brought to Portland as general freight gent of the o.-W. R. N. Co. The city freight office wl.l be split. C. II. Iexier. general agent, remain ing in charge of the o.-W. R. N". business and Harry Hudson, senior soliciting freight agent In the Port land office, taking; charge of the South ern Pacific. Whether the city passentrer offices will be e grew a ted has not been deter mined, but this move seems Inevitable. If the spilt Is made C. W. ptlnger. st present In charge of the combined office, will be given charge of the O.-W. R. N. office. A new agent wlU be named for the Southern Pacific CONVICTS BUILD 'TIS SAID Pr. White Tells Whjr Trusties at State Hoapltal Fqual PatlrnU. Pr. Calvin S White, secretary of the Plate Hoard of Health, explains condi tions at the S'ate Tuberculosis Sani tarium, under wh'.i a a number of trus ties, almost equal to the number of patients there, are working about the sanitarium, by saying that the con victs are employed In constructing butM!n- there. About two weeks ago." snld Dr. White. "IT trusties were transferred to, t'ie sanitarium to begin work on a new laum'.rjr and steam-heating plant. The last Uegls'ature appropriated 10- ) for that purpose, but this sum woul 1 fa:i considerably short of tat required to erect the buildings. The brick la supplied from the Penitentiary brickyard at a cost of about II per thousand, and the trusties receive :S cents a day for their work. In this way it will be possible to erect ade quate buildings. A large number or cnen are smrloyej became It Is ths In tention to have ths buildings under roof before the heavy rains set In. "It Is true that there ars only It patients at the sanitarium now. but that Is because many have left tor the furr.mer to work, but they will return la taa Winter. CIVIC COUNCIL ELECTS 0. A.
