It Is estimated that more than 400 ma chines are now owned In a county the largest town of which boasts a popu lation of a little mora than 6,000. It Is also especially true of farmer autol'ts as a class that the larger cars are the most popular. The best seems to be none too good for the srrowere of grain in this eectlon of the state. Their machinery, their horses, and every part of their farm equipment Is the beat that money can buy. Thus it happens that when a tiller of tha soil comes to purchase a car he does not stop at the price but picks out the car that seems to him to be tha best fitted for hla purpose. Tha one thing he la particular about is to get the power necessary to take him up tha hlUe and over tha roads. Tha development of automoblllng naa also resulted in the development of better roads. A Good Roads Associa tion, composed almost exclusively of automobile owners was organized two years ago and haa done much to obtain Improvement of th county's highways. Macadam roads have been constructed where this was possible, straw has been used to great advantage In the Summer, permanent bridges have been built and step have been taken to make all future road Improvements permanent 1natd of temporary. GRAIN CROPS BUMPER WILLAJEETTK VALLEY FARMERS REALIZLYQ IRRIGATION'S AID. Double Amount of Return Given to Farming; Community Wtll Wa tered During Dry Season. COTTAOB GROVE, Or., Sopt- 17. (Special.) Th conditions In Cottage Grov and vicinity were never bettor than they ara thl year. Th grain crop ar all harvested and nearly all th threshing done. Tha yield la good. Th hay crop waa never better. There has been a large immigration to this territory in tha past year, that has caused many lama tracts of land to be cut up into smaller tracts, and the result is that fourfold more has been raised on tha same land than before, Th farmers are just beginning to realise that with Irrigation, even in th Willamette Valley, mora than twice the crops can ba grown on the same land with water during the dry sea son. Last season three farmers. Curiin. Stocks and Spray, put in an irrigation dltoh three miles long, running through their farms, that covers about 8u0 acres of good farming land. Stewart & Porter Uroa have put In a ditch this season that covers 300 acres on Mosby Creek and have sot out a large tract of this land to apples and pears. At Lorane, 11 miles west of here, the Churchill-Matthews Company and the Milwaukee Orchard Company have set out over 1400 acres of apples and pears. Many smaller orchards of from 10 to 10 acres have been planted here in the past three years. Cottage Grov is an Important point along th Southern Paclflo system. It enjoys terminal rates on Its exports of lumber and in all the important mat ters of passenger transportation is ac corded distinct advantage. The mining industry has aroused considerable Interest this Summer on aocount of the rich ores that have bean discovered in the West Coast properties. Ther ar 11 lumber mills tributary to Cottage Grove, a score of which are within 21 miles of town. The em ployee of these mills trade In town and th monthly payroll exceeds ISO.000. Timber experts estimate that there Is 16.000.000.000 feet of standing timber tributary to Cottage Grove, and at 17.60 per thousand for locating and milling expenses, paid to labor, will Involve an expenditure of 112S.SOO.000 and will tak 10 year to mov It.
