SUGAR illl FEARED
i'o Tariff Means Death of In
dustry, Say Planters.
PROFESSOR TELLS VIEWS
I moors tic Chairman of House In-
Ttlgtkm Cotnmltlr Disagrees
With Ideas Expressed by
Lontviana Grower.
WASHINGTON July 1 7. Louisiana
planters and producers of sugar mad
a determined stand for the tariff before
the House sugar trust committee to
day, declaring that a reduction of so car
duties would ruin the domestic pro-
riurtlon of cane tuitar and that free
sugar would annihilate both the cane
and beet sucar industries of the coun
try. Chairman Hard wick, the Geora-la
XVmocrat, disagreed with their tariff
Ideas.
"If you solons." said Professor TV. C
Ftubbs. ex-State Chemlt of Louisiana,
"want to take the tariff off sugar, you
must make up your minds In adrance
that yoa will kill all domestic sugar
production. The big planters and re
finers of Louisiana might manage to
Tape up enough to start OTr again
In some troplral country, but the small
growers would be ruined. IV hen yoa
take of the tariff you may write our
obituaries.
J. E- Burguierea, president of the
Louisiana Planters' Association, said a
cut In the tariff would kill the Louis
Una Industry, upon which J.000.O0S
American citizens depended for a lire
:hood.
Professor Stubbs will be recalled af
ter the committee returns from New
York, where hearings will be held to
morrow.
While Bura-ulerlea u on the stand
It was brought out that Louisiana
sugar planters and Independent refiners
fear the American Sugar UeOnlng Corn
ea nr.
I can't get Independent refiners to
coma to Louisiana and bid on our
aucar." he said. "They say they will
not come into our field, but wUl buy
our sugars If we tret them lntyhetr
markeL
"They gave no satisfactory reason
therefore, but I made my own deduc
tions that the Independent refiners re-
aard Louisiana as American Sugar Me-
fining Company territory and refused
to enter that territory for fear they
will precipitate trouble for themselves
