day morning. Tha big ateamer eama
up tha river from Astoria Friday,
making tha run from th lower river
1. slightly more than eight hours, or
la as fast time aa th river steamers
rover th sam distance.
Th repairs nseessary ax not great.
nr do they Involve any great expen
diture of money, although It la said
that It will coat several thousand dol
lsrs to place the big ateamer In first
class working order. It will take sev
eral days to complete th undertaking.
whi-h will b done by th Port of
Portland.
P red go Is Heavy.
Just how seriously th Chinook hss
ben damaged cannot be ascertained
until she Is lifted from the water,
which, in Itself, la no UtU undertak
ing. Th Chinook la one of tha larges
vexsels that haa coma up the river to
Portland and la th biggest that haa
ever been lifted on the Portland dry
dock. Several hours, probsbly. will be
necessary to lift tha great Army vessel
In the cradle.
la her work on tha Columbia River
Bar tha Chinook baa often bumped on
the shoals. Inasmuch as It Is necessary
for her to work dlractely over them
that the auction pipe may do Its work,
hh hss never been seriously damaged
In the work on the bar.
Th Chinook, a year ago, waa fitted
with a complete set of nsw boilers In
Portland. A apeclal appropriation from
Congress waa nseessary that this work
could be done. Officers pf th United
States Engineer Corps, under whose
supervision the Chinook operated, say
that her boilers are working parfect
ly and are aa good aa any on tha Pa
cific Coast.
Id charge of Captain George II. Dun
bar the Chinook has been dredging the
channel at th mouth of th Columbia
Rlvr for nearly a year, accomplishing
good results. At the annual survey
nt th river made by the Engineer
Corp a. Major Mclndo In charge, last
month a pleasing Inorease In depth
ever a year ago waa noted. The ex
act status of th water at low tide haa
not bean announced, but It is said to
he more than 17 feet. To th work
of tha Preds Chinook la due part of
the credit for acourlng out the bar.
Hnr1ners believe when th South
J.tty Is completed and a North Jetty
placed In position IS or 40 feet of
water may b obtained by discreet
use of the ocean-going dredge.
William E. Morhoff is chief engineer
of tha Chinook and his chief assistant
Is I Blteoux. Oeorga Dexter la th
Chinook' first officer.
Chief Assistant Engineer Blteoux Is
fn Portland for his first visit slnoa
1i0. Ha oam to Portland aa on of
tha crew of the steamer Oeneral Miles
at that time and eays he picked straw
berries In th present business district
f St. Johns. Piteous haa been aboard
tha Chinook for nine months, transfer
ring in th capacity of chief assistant
engineer from the steamer Flyer, of
sua t tie.
Tha Chinook probably will leave for
Astoria either Friday or Saturday.
