Gray will be required to spend at least two days every week In Spokane. He has arranged, accordingly, to main lain an office In Spokane In addition to his headquarters here. C. A. Coolldge, general manager of the Oregon Electric, who also becomes gen eral manager of the Bpokane A Inland Kmplre. also has opened an office In Ppoaane. and will spend about half of his time there until he becomes accus tomed to his new duties. The office force regularly maintained at Spokane will be continued there. There Is no In tentlon to move any of tha books or records of the road to this city. By becoming president of this road Mr, Gray how heads seven transportation companies besides the Ruth Trust Com pany. Ha Is president of the Spokane. Portland Seattle Railway (the North Bank road), the Oregon Trunk, the Ore gon Klectrlc. the I'rtlted Railways, the jacinc A Eastern. The Dalles. Astoria aV Columbia River Navigation Company and tha ripokana V Inland Empire. These now comprise the group of roads known as the Hill system In Oregon However, moat of the North Bank road is In Washington, and the Spokane & nland Empire Is In both Washington ind Idaho. While this group of roads frequently Is referred to aa "the Hill lines In the Northwest." this term la Incorrect, as the lines In the Northwest Include the Great Northern, which Is under separate management. The roads of wkich Mr. Gray Is presi dent are owned Jointly by the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific. In- til recently, though, the Hill officials did not consider It advisable to place the Spokane Inland Empire under common management with tha other lines In the group. The Oreat Northern and Northern Pa cific acquired ownership of that system bout two years ago. and although It waa no secret that Mr. Hill thua con trolled It It waa continued under sepa rate management. The Ppokane road operates both steam and electric lines, and Is one of the most promising properties In the Hill system. The west central and northwestern part of the county was placed In District 1. which will ba in charge of County School Superln- endent Jackson. The southern and east central part of the county was placed In District Z. of which Super visor Bolln will have charge. The country embraced In the forks of the Santlam River and the tier of districts on the south aide of tho South Hantlam was placed In District 3. which will be In charge of Supervisor Banner.
