lumbia River, that the chances of the
past season have created a new chan
nel, north of the old course which Is
two feet deeper than the other. While

aliehtly and that the new channel Is
a natural road, due to scourlnc caused

age when the shaft was also damaged.
Captain "Jim" Shaver says that In an
other week ail traces of the tire that
played havoc aboard the steamer Shaver
wlil have been eradicated and she will
resume service. She Is lying at the
Snaver yards on the East Side, where
she was towed from the Portland Ship
building Company's plant Wednesday.

Line, the steamer Pomona carried con

there will be heavy tourist travel during
the season, as It Is a trip of less than
two hours, and tlcketa are Interchange
able with the electric line, so visitors
can view the Fails of the Willamette
without great loss of time. Two round
trips are being made daily and three
Sundays.

A bitter family feud over an alleaed
wrong culminated tragically In the
little town of Halley. In Southern Idaho,
late Inst night, when Ben Hlggs. a
prominent rancher, shot and killed
Joseph Jones, a campiender, who was
unarmed at the time.
Since the kllilnu; threats of lynchlnu;
have been made. Hlggs was Imme
diately placed under arrest and Is kept
under a double guard, on the ciiarK"
of murder In the first degree.

Members of the Desert Land Board
and State Land Board will leave the
nlsht of July 4 for a two-weeks' Inspec
tion trip of the 'Irrigation projects in
Southern and Central Orecon.
The party will Include Governor
West. State Treasurer Kay. Attorney
General Crawford and State Engineer
John H. Lewis. James R. Linn, a mem
ber of the State Parole Board, probably
will accompany the party. It Is prob
able Secretary Olcott will be unable to
attend because so far there has been
no appointment of a chief clerk and he
Is conducting the affairs of the office
alone.
The first stop will be at Klamath
Fails, from which place they will sro
by automobile to Lakevlew, where the
Governor and members of the State
Land Board will take up questions in
connection with the Warner Valley
Stock Company case. From there the
entire party will go Into Warner Valley.
20 miles west of Lakevlew. to examine
a Carey Act project of 130.000 acres,
which has been more or less actively
under way for some time. Ketumlns;
to Lakevlew the party will jto north
to Paisley, where considerable difficulty
has been encountered In securing the
reclamation of a 12.000-acre project
under the Carey Act.

project of the Deschutes Land Company,
where the party 'expects to find steam
shovels at work and general activity

Seven Windjammers Come In Three
Days for Lumber.
Ia three days seven sailing vessels
have entered the Columbia Klver, the
largest showing- In many months, and
It Is attributed to the southerly weather
that prevailed until yesterday. The
arrivals of "Tuesday, when there were
three, and two reported Wednesday
were for coastwise cargoes, but yester
day two came to work lumber offshore,
the barkentine C. F. Crocker arriving"
t 1:40 o'clock In the afternoon from
Honolulu, which port she left June 10,
and the schooner Americana reported
from San Francisco, whence she sailed
June 21.
The Americana Is under charter to
J. J. Moore Company and will load
for Brisbane, her cargo having been
purchased on the lower river, and the
Crocker will be loaded at Westport un
der charter to Balfour, Guthrie & Com
pany. The French ship Marechal de Castries,
which Is to leave down about 7 o'clock
this morning, was oleaerd yesterday at
the Custom-House for the united iving
dom for orders, carrying 1. 284. MS feet
of lumber valued $13,312. dispatched by
the Pacific Export Lumber Company
The French bark Marechal de Gontaut.
which was shitted through the bridges
yesterday from the Portland mill-to an
anchorage off the Oceanlo dock, will be
towed seaward Sunday. She will prob
ably clear today.
Tillamook Launched t Xorfh Rend.
MABSHFIBLD, Or, June 29. (Spe
cial.) The new gasoline boat Tilla
mook, which was built by Kruse &
Banks, at North Bend, was launched at
that city. Miss Alice Dean, of Astoria,
and daughter of one of the part own
ers of the boat, ohrlstened her. The
Tillamook la a finely-built boat, 124
feet long. She will be used by the
Nehalem South Coast Trading Com
pany. As soon as the gasoline engines
are Installed the boat will be taken
north. Captain C, E. Edwards, who
operates a boat line on Coos River,
has sold tha gasoline passenger boat
auuiooma to Masters Brothers. The
