As sistant Engineer Williams, of the Uni ted States Engineer Department, in spected the Nehalem River bar and Jetty recently and he and Mr. Tohl and Mr. Gersonl have made their reports. Cltlxens of Nehalem have subscribed ISS.000 with which to build the Jetty out to a point where the Government will take eharire and extend It out to sea." said Mr. Gersonl. ".More than 2000 feet of Jetty have been constructed al ready, with only 130.000 spent. There Is ample water over the bar now for shipping and when the Jetty is com pleted we will have 20 feet at low tide, "There has been considerable other Improvement work done In Nehalem. More than C690 has been subscribed for a new bridge over the Nehalem River at Nehalem. The cost of the struc ture will be 120.000 and the subscrip tion will be given Into the county fund. In 30 days the new pipeline from the city water works will have been completed. Only 1000 feet of pipe Is yet to be laid. Six new buildings are now under construction, one of which Is a three-story hotel, showing an un precedented building boom In the city." -tVhat Is tho condition of the railroad building into Nehalem?" Mr. Gersonl was asked. "We should have It completed In less than six months. Ten miles of steel are ye to be laid and two bridges re main to bo built. Officials of the com pany say the road will be ready by Ausrust 1. We are not that optimistic However, the road from Nehalem to Til lamook will begin operations, carry ing passengers and freight. July 1." The Nehalem business men will leave for home today by automobile, via lie ilinnville and Tillamook. AMAZON" REPORTED LEAKING Ilarkentlne ruts Into Fanning: Is land on Way to Australia. Cable advices yesterday reported that the barkentine Amaxon. one of the best- known of Coast sailing vessels, had put Into Fanning Island, a short distance north of the equator. In a leaky condi tion. She Is laden with lumber from Wlllapa Harbor for Australia. About Ave weeks ago a report was made to the San Francisco Board of Marine Underwriters that the Amazon, while lying at South Bend, had begun to take water after being loaded to the water line. It developed that while some of the seams had opened, much of the trouble was due to worm-eaten planking. With the use of plugs and cement the leaks were practically stopped and she sailed May 21. Work done at the time leads to tne belief on the waterfront that she Is not leaking badly and that It was not so much for that reason as that she waa out of fresh water for her steam pump that she put Into Fanning Island. An other carrier of the type, the barken tine Lahaina. Is now at South Bend, loading lumber for Australia, and has been leaking, owing to striking on the mud and her seams opening. As a suf ficient supply of fresh water may not be carried on the voyage for her steam gear, a gasoline engine has been or dered from San Francisco to be con nected with her main pump. Alliance to Go South. MARSHFIELD. Or.. June 23. (Spe cial.) The steamer Alliance. which has been- gunning between Portland and Coos Bay and Eureka, will make a trip to San Francisco before return ing to this port. It is thought In local shipping circle tbat this means that the Alliance will hereafter run to San Francisco and that possibly another vessol will be put on the Coos Bay Portland run.
