Western avenua commission merchants were
today advised of a 10-cent per hundred ad
vance on new potatoes in California, urow
er report an exceptionally active demand
for new potatoes, particularly since Texas
potatoes hav been practically ordered out
of tha Northwest. Two or three carloads
of new potatoes arrived yesterday ana were
held at 2ft centa per pound.
Th season's first straight carload of Cali
fornia mixed fruits arrived. The car con
tained peaches, which were offered at (1.50;
anrlcots and nluma at (1.75. Th straw
berry market was firmer and higher prices
prevailed. Dealers asked (1.50 for most
stock, cantaloupes are -cioaiuua hi, so
other carload of watermelons Is dua to
morrow evening.
Egg receipts wer heavy. Dealers mak
very little headway In working oft th ac
cumulated stocks. Small Spring chickens
and ducks were In oversupply.
Th butter market was steady. Alaska
orders are of fair volume.

A man believed to be Jess Hall, an es
caped "trusty" from the Oregon State
Penitentiary, held up and robbed Guy
Mahr on the streets here about midnight
last nlg-ht. He then tied his victim's
hands with his belt and compelled hlra to
lie in a dry ditch.
A few minutes later the footpad at
tempted to halt T. D. Golden, assistant
to Professor Lewis, of the Oregon Agri
cultural College, who yelled and took to
his heels. The robber then ran In the
opposite direction and the man in the
ditch took a third course. Officers are
on the trail of the outlaw, who) Is headed
toward Independence. .
