trains, as they fall over tha cliff to

streets of Maupla. aaaurlne; a good
water supply.

Wheat Shlpprd From Her.
Tha wheat from a la rare area, will
surely ba shipped from Maupla. Al
ready IS cars of last year's crop have
passed through tha warehouse on Its
way to market and mora will yet
coma. The mall for tha Juntpsr Flat
country will coma from thera after
July 1. and that will help tbem soma.
Tha other Maupla on tha Harrimaa
road, acroaa tha rlvar. Is scarcely
started yet, even tha depot being yet
unfinished.
Tha distance from Maupln to Wap
Isitia la 1J miles. Tha road winds up
tha canyon hill at an caay grade.

Juniper Flat country, ona of tha larg

of tha mountain and near tha center

Tha principal placea passed on tha

Waplnltla 1 at the mouth of the
canyon of Waplnltla Creek, which
flows Into the leschutee two mfles
above Maupln. Two surveys have been
m&de up this canyon by the 11111 peo
ple, and It Is said a road could be
constructed through It very cheaply
and the grade ta easy. Puch a road. If

would top one of the finest timber
befs In Oregon, and the people here
sav there never can ba any other out
let for thla timber. From the Warm
Fprtnc Indian reservation the Waplnl
tla merchants draw a good trade.
Twenty miles from here. In the reser
vation. Ilea the celebrated warm spring.
There is no hotel or other accommoda
tions there, but over a hundred people
ran usually be found In camp there.
Town Has Hold.
WaplnlMa has two large general
stores. There la a good hotel kept by
O. U Ifarpham. who also has a feed
barn. Then thera are other business
places, blacksmith shops, etc, a num
ber of good dwellings, a large school
building and a new church la about to
be erected.
ai!rltl Is on the main road lead
ing from the north to tbe Indian res
ervation, la It miles southwest from
Iufur and i miles almost due south
of The tallea. and good roada to ail
direction.
After July 1 residents of Waplnltla
will for the first time receive The Ore
ronian on tbe day of publication In
time to read at their supper tablea If
the train Is on time up the Deschutes
and the stage from there does not
break down.
m Waplnltla Is not only not out of tha
world but vary much In tha world, and
Is far from being tbe undar dog In the
fight for supremacy among; Wasco
County towns.

annual convention of the Pacific Coast
Advertising Men's Association, which be

headed by I'avld Meaeaeohn. president
of the Portland Ad Club, they were
greeted by a rousing yell from SO or
more local ad men who bad gone to the
station to welcome them. For fully five
mlnture yells were thrown back and
forth, sorga were sung, accompanied In
part by a big baaa drum In tha bands
of a rather tall party In the "Ministerial
Prlgaile."

CINCINNATI. June 12 Sensational
statements by attorneys for the state
and defense gave promise that the
trial of Edgar S. Cooke. f Chicago,
for the alleged embezzlement of 142.
000 from the Big Four Railway Com
pany, may rcault Id unexpected dis
closures. The trlsl began today.
Dents F. Cash. Assistant Prosecuting
Attorney, declared that Cooke gave a
woman 122.000 In the original packages
which he Is alleged to have abstracted
from the Big Four Railroad. Ac
cording to Cash. 'The women In the
case" took the money to New York,
where Cooke afterward Joined her.
Chlrles W. Bsker. attorney for
Cooke, asserted thst his client had
been made a "scapegoat" to protect the
company from punishment for rebat
ing. Baker said officials of the Big Four
Railroad were suspected of taking
millions or dollars from the treasury
snd paying them. In violation of Fed
eral laws, to favorite shippers.
The charges against Cooks were tha
outcome of Die embezzlement of S$t3.
000 from the Big Four Railroad by
Charles U Warrlner. now serving a
six years sentence In the Ohio Peni
tentiary. Warrlner has been brought
to this city from Columbus to testify
In the trial of Cooke.
Another wltnesa who will testify in
the trial Is Mrs. Jesnnette Stewart
Ford, whose name was mentioned by
Warrlner as having received a large
part of the money taken from the rail
road company.

River and Its tributaries started this
morning. Prsctlcally all of the J00 de
fendants appeared In person or by at
torney and filed their answera to tha
complaints of the Government.
The United States Is represented by
Federal Attorney John McCourt. of
rortland. and Oliver H. Morton. North
west Chief of the Reclsmatlon Service,
legal department, which Instituted the
sulta
According to McCourt thera Is no
disposition on the part of the Govern
ment to deprive the water-users of any
of their rights, but merely to deter
mine definitely once and for all the
actual rights of each man using water
from the streams. It Is not believed
there will be any actual contest be
tween the Government and the settlers.
If there Is any rasl legal battle. It
will come between the big ditch com
panies and the Reclamation Service.
According to the complaints which
have been filed, the Government Is
seeking to fix an arbitrary stsndard
of one-half Inch an acre or one second
foot for each (0 acres. Nearly all of
the users are asking about one Inch an
acre, the generally accepted standard
In the Northwest. The Water Com
missioner merely called the docket ot
the cases todsy and received the an
swers. Ths Government win then file
replies to sach of these, after which the
cases will bs set for bearing.
