MERRIMENT ' MUST REIGN Demands of Society Women Granted, bnt Official or Celebration Hope Gala Character Will "ot tie Forgotten. Ralph W. Hoyt, president, snd George L. Hutchln. manager of the Portland Rose Festival, desire to meet the de mands of prominent society women of the city who called on them Tuesday with a request that the masked parade as a feature of the festival week be dropped, but are unwilling that as a re sult the festival spirit should be absent from Portland during the great annual celebration. After much conferring yesterday they worked out a plan which. If adopted by the people of the city, as they believe It will be, will result In arousing more of the holiday and festival spirit than would the masked parade, they believe. They wish the people of Portland, es pecially the women, to design bright and attractive costumes, such as thoss of French peasants. Spanish senorltas. Swiss peasants, and others, and wear them during carnival week, particularly on Tuesday night, when the revels will take place on Sixth and Seventh streets, from Yamhill to Burnslde, accompanied by ths music of many bands. Mr. Hoyt and Mr. Hutchln are desirous that every woman shall make soma ef fort to deck herself In some sort of es pecially attractive raiment. In a way that will add to the general festal ap pearance of the city while tha Rose Fes tival la In progress. Garlands of roses In place of regulation headgear was one of ths suggestions mads. The men are also expected to do something along the same line. It will suit ths fancy of the festival managers If. for example, those belonging to tha military adjuncts of fraternal orders, and to ths Natloral G jard and Naval Militia, turn out In uniform. If cadets, baseball players and others would do likewise It would also be appreciated. Clowns will not be barred- Tha main point is that they want every person possible to enter Into the spirit of the occasion. The Peninsula Rose Association met Tuesday night at the carbarns In North Alblna, when reports wers made to tha effect that arrangements had been mads to build the roea booth at the Union Station and that the North Rank Railroad would build ths rose booth at Its station without cost to the committee. A general manager for both booths will be employeu during Rose Festival week and volunteers of men and women from tha Peninsula will be asked to assist In distributing rosea among strangers coming In on the trains. It was reported that arrange ments had been completed for the col lection of rosea on the Peninsula by a special e'.octrlo car. which will run down on the St, Johns carllne svery morning and deliver the roses to ths dopot booths.
