IPPKK WILLAMETTE IS HIGHER
Season I Iaatrs Known for Good
Water In Many Years.
On the upper reaches of the Willam
ette, at ptnta above Corvallla. the Wil
lamette Ktver has attained a stag not
equaled In the Spring eeasoo for many
years, according to Captain A. W. lira
has. of the Yellow Stack Una. who aays
that Ms adrlcea Indicate the stage la at
least four feet. The Increased depth has
permitted late trlpa to be made by the
ereamer Pomona aa far aa Peoria, where
she operated during the Winter hauling
grain, hut it was feared that the season
had enile.l until tlte recent rise waa re
parted. There remain only tons of
grain to be moved from the I'eorla
district and that will be accomplished In
another week.
Conditions there are Influenced by
melting snows In the mountalna and
beavy rains, but the late rise la attrib
uted to the melting snow, and chilly
weather In the htchT levels has checked
It temporarily. From Corvallla to Port
land there ts an abundance of water and
last year's dredctr.g and the construc
tion of permanent d kea are said to
have diminished shoaie to such an ex
tent that only one remains that may
give trouble at ordinary stages of wa
t-e.
i:y Fall there will be rhangea through
wMch at least one additional steamer
will ply on the I'pper Willamette, as
the two operating regutarly cannot car
for the growing trade.
