Confirmation came from Pan Fran
Cisco last night of a report current on
the waterfront yesterday that J. J.
Moore, of the J. J. Moore Comrany, San
Francisco, tad purchased 11.000.000 fee
of Columbia River and Puiret Sound
lumber for shipment to Australia.
The Columbia I'.lver lialf of the
mount wan purchased from the St.
Helena Lumber Company and the Mon
arch Lumber Company, and the Puset
Found share from the Eelilnnham Hay
Company, of BeHlnpharn. Wash. The
price paid was $12 i thousand for No.
1. which Is considered jrood in view of
the present rather stagnant condition
of the lumber market, complained of
by manufacturers.
Shipments, to t made from purchase
points, will b-rln at once. Mr. Moore
announced, and )m expects that the en
tire amount will be moved in the next
three months. The names of the vessels
chartered to carry the cargoes were not
announced.
The announcement of this deal Is ex.
pected to lend Impetus to the lumber
market, which has been dull of late.

Fire Chief Campbell Justifies action of
the department la not sending the fire-
boat to the fire In the motor-boats near
the Inman-Poulsen Lumber Company's
plant recently. He declared to the mem'
be re of the fire committee yesterday aft'
ernoon that the boat could not have
been used to advantage there; that, had
Its streams been turned on. some one
might have been killed, owing to the
heavy pressure and that the tire would
not have been handled any better.
Experience has proved that fires In
boats like those can be handled to better
advantage with a small hose than with
larger hose, said Chief Campbell. "It
requires too much exertion to drag heavy
hose around and It is impracticable.
f'-attallon Chief Stevens, who has charge
of the district where the Ore occurred,
did not order the flreboat out until some
one cut a boat adrift. He then called
the boat to protect the waterfront not
to fisht the fire In those small boats.
Members of the Motor-Boat Club had
filed a remonstrance against the fire de
partment's action in not sending the flre
boat when the night operator was tel
phoned to. Chief Campbell said the oper
ators have orders not to send the flre
boat on telephone calls, but to dispatch
he nearest engine company, which was
done In this case. He said the fire s
handled In the best way. The committee
will get an official report from him and
will consider the case then.

Smoke Overcomes Four.

Fire, which broke out In a local furni
ture store 'early Thursday morning
endangered the lives of four firemen,
who were rescued only after a hard
battle on the part of their comrades.
The fire started in a loft in which a
carload of mattresses were stored and
the fumes from burning wool and
feathers overcame the first member of
the department who ventured into the
building. Tho loss Is estimated at
18000.
