Xrb Rroa, hl been offered SO cents a
poun 4 for so.ooo pound of new crop bops.
Although the buyer would pay cents down
they refused the offer.
X predicted la The Oregonlan two weeks
ego." said Conrad Krebe yesterday, "that
34 oeata would be a small price for hops
sad that I would not aril at that price.
At that time the market was IS cents. The
situation bss not changed slnos then and
I will say that, taking It for granted large
crops will be produced la the United States,
the market will open up at S3 cents at
least. If anything should happen to tha
crop la Europe or the Fatted States, a 36
or freest market wtll be a certainty. Any
grower who puts aside hla opportunity of
making a fortune by contracting at tha
present price Is not entitled to make any
money.-
Krebs Bros, are putting an Irrigation oat
fit oa their big farm at Independence. Tha
plant will hare a capacity of eo.ooo gal
loaa an hour, or woo. OOO gallons 'for each
13-hour day. At the Corvallls Agricultural
College, says sir. Krebs. It has been demon
strated that Irrigation will Increase tha crop
one-third and la some cases wtll double the
crop.
The English hopgrowers sre already
tng trouble ahead. The crop la making good
- progress, but an early attack of Termla
Is expected. The Kentish Observer of April
ST says:
Tnder the Influence of the warm weath
er of the last few days the bop plants In
Kent hare made marked f.rowth. A week
ago they were only Just appearing above
ground, but now tha aboMs are quite for
ward and looking very sturdy, la some ore
ch-arus the apple and plura trees are af
fected by aphis. an this Is regarded by
hopgrowers as a sure Indication of aa ear
Ir attack on tbe hop plant. We may ex
pect, therefore, an early resort to washing.
London hop dealers clrcau-s. bearing
dates of April - to 26 say:
Wild. Xeame A Co. Trade during tha
we-k has been confined to narrow limits
but the extreme scarcity of available stocks
hse the effect of keeping prices very firm.
Manger A Henley A steady Inquiry con
tinues for present requirements; tha ex
treme scarcity of stocks becomes mora ap
parent every week. Prices show much flrm-
YV. II. A II. Le May Several parcels of
hops during the past week have gone out
of growers bands and very few are left
to Tom Boylen. one of the leading aheepmea
of Eastern Oregon and former president of
the state Board of Sheep Commissioners.
lis says there are at least ISS.OOs less
shsep on Eastern Oregon ranges this year
than last. Tb forest reserve policy, the
slump In tha price of wool and mutton and
tha Increase In tha number of homesteads,
which are decreasing the amount of free
range, are given as the principal causes of
tbe shortage la the state flocks Last year's
clip was a Utile less than 3S.S00.uus pounds,
while thla year It will not reach IMOO.oeO.
Uoylen gives tbe tariff agitation as the
causa for tha present low prices, which are
below the cost of production. He aays pres
ent eondttlons are really worse than thoae
of 139.1. but he looks fur a speedy reaction.
