CHICAGO, May 2. Leading longs took
the initiative In the buying of May wheat
today, raising promptly all bids that the
shorts made In st tempts to cover. Dry wea
ther In the Northwest finally became quite
a factor on the bull side. Furthermore, tb
world's available supply decreased heavily,
and foreign markets were generally firm.
Cssh demand was conspicuously absent, but
that circumstance seemed to cut no Ilgui-e
In lessening the urgency for any future, not
excepting May. July rarged from 83c
to 89c and closed firm, lo up, at 80c

Big chartering of lake steamers occa
sioned a bullish feeling In corn. July fluc

Tha livestock market held steady yester
day with a moderate volume of business.
The run was smaller than on the opening
day of the week
Most ot the trading was in cattle. Eleven
loads of steers changed hands, th best
bringing .75 and the others $8.35 to 6.S0.
Two lots of Spring lambs sold at C25
snd (7 and a bunch of sheep went at 2.75,
There were no sales of hogs. Receipts yes
terday were Hi cattle, ISO aheap, 113 hogs
and 8 horses.
