Hatty Fanwell. MeCredle's latest
Cleveland recruit made hli debut on
the slab for Portland ' yesterday, and
vhll he loet his own gama by a 2-to-l
sAore. be demonstrated that he la a
capable pitcher.
Sacramento rot to Fanwell In tho
first Inning and two hits, one of them
a, scratchy one through Rodgers. and
a wild pitch by the Portland slabster
s-ave the visitors two runs. Portland
waa unable to solve Clarence Thomp
son for more than one ruts and uc
cumbed to the OKourke trlba before
the big Sunday crowd.
Fanwell walked Shlnn. the flrat man
up, and fajled to fool O'Rourke. who
slnsled. and two were on the paths.
Catcher Thomas sacrificed, advanc
lng both runners, and Fanwell butted
In with a wild pitch which allowed
Bhlnn to tally the first run. Danslg
then laced a hot grounder toward
Rodgers. which got by for a hit and
O-Rourke tallied what proved to be
the winning run.
Kraeger Register Tally.
In only one Inning In the frame did
Thompson fall to retire the first bat
ter, and that waa In the sixth, when
Kraeger opened up with a two-base
wallop Into the left field crowd, and
cored a moment later, when Jack
Barry bounced one Into right field for
a single and took second when the toss
was made to the plate. In this Inning.
Rodger reached third when his bound
er to Shtnn caught Barry between third
and home, but Walter Kuhn, sent In to
bat for Murray, fanned and the oppor
tunity went glimmering.
McCredle sent Koestner In to bat for
Fanwell in the seventh, and the silent
one pitched the balance of the game,
allowing but one Senator to reach
first during his actlrlty.
The fielding feature of the game wa
a great one-handed catch of a hard
liner from the bat of Thomas, made
by Pecklnpaugh In the eighth Inning.
This stunt served to appease the appe
tite of the fans, even though Portland
lost the game. Portland scored si
bits, while Sacramento registered but
five, but the Tlsltors were favored by
tuck In that first Inning.

where he was forced to remain for an
hour after the game, under the protec

"The fans had no kick coming and
I don't understand their action," said
President Shreeder. "Shackleford made
a couple of bad guesses, but there was
no cause for such a demonstration, l
will see there is more polios protection

VANCOUVER STORY DIFFERENT
Players Say They and Not Mike

SEATTLE, Wash., April 30. (Spe

relative to the attempted mobbing of
Umpire Shackleford and the alleged he

the official. Is widely at variance with
the details of the affair as described by
Vancouver players who arrived ln Se
attle tonight.
During the game the teams were not
hurrying up things, but the fans wera
after Shackleford. Once when he
stopped the game to get the crowd back
from tha right foul Una they throw
cushions at him.
After the game, as the players were
leaving the field, the "kids" again com
menced throwing cushions at Shackle
ford. This stirred up the crowd, and
they rushed on the field. Shackleford
went to the Vancouver players' bench
for protection. The players surrounded
him, bats in hand. The only Tacoma
player that rendered assistance was
Charlie Schmutz.
Someone' threw a link of a chain and
hit Pitcher Clark, of Vancouver. Over
the ear, and both Scharnweber and
Manager Brashear, of Vancouver, were
hit on the head with cushions. Scharn
weber was nearly knocked down.
Mike Lynch had Deen in tne grauu
stand back of the Tacoma bench. About
this time he showed up on the field.
"Get back!" said Lynch to the crowd,
and pushed! his way in to the umpire.
