County. Missouri, yesterday. Kelly Fain,
the s.year-old son of William T. Fain
waa carried a quarter of a mile by the
wind and was thrown against the
f round with such force that nearly every
bone In Ms body waa broken and his
brains were dashed out. Ilia mother
was struck by flying; timbers and
fatally hurt. Ills father's home, a
mansion of ante-bellum days, was
blown to atoms.
Children I)ah to Cave.
The elder Fain and bis three children
were returning from a field when tbe
storm broke. He urged them to run
to a cava In tha yard of their home.
Two; of the children reached the cava
and were sai ed. Tha little boy could
not run fast enough and waa carried
off before the eyea of tha family.
A tornado struck Seda.Ha, Mo., at 19
o'clock thla morning- and damaged
property in a path two blocks wide
and a mile and a half long. Mrs. Isaac
Herd and George Alspaugh were cut by
flying glass, in both instance timbers
being- blown through their windows.
Houses were torn from their founda
tions, and large trees were torn up or
snapped In twain. The roots of two
buildings were blown off and carried a
block away.

contracts in the stork market last
week threw little light on the specu
lative sentiment expressed In the op
erations. But comparison with the
previous week it was possible to dis
cern a distinct movement of recovery
and a subsidence In activity.
In tbe bond division there occurred
another revival of demand and upward
tendency of prices, comparable to that
of the opening of the year. This
movement may be ascribed largely to
action of bank resources in the re
serve renters and thla again la a con
sequence of diminished demand for
credits which argues a, lessened trade
activity.
Advices la regard to some of the
leading industries, notably steel and
textile, are confirmatory of thla Implication.
Features of the bond market Included
new Issues of railroad bonds of longer
maturity. Reports of railroad earnings
for March indicated success In lbs cut
ting down of running expenses and
corresponding benefit to the value of
railroad shares resulted.

pants of the hotel escaped in their

The cause of the fire, which started
at 1 o'clock, and continued until i. Is
unknown. The hotel, a feed store and
a barber shop were entirely consumed,
the blase Anally being stopped after It
bad ruined a near-beer hall.
The lose will be more than 15.000,
and is only partially covered by Insurance.

bouse this evening. Judge Clifford
granted a habeas corpus application of
Clark Veatch. arrested here Saturday
night by Cheyenne. Wyo.. officers on a
charge of embesxllng $2000 from the Pru
dential Insurance Company at that place
and th agent waa given his liberty. He
will be compelled, however, to appear
before Governor Hay tomorrow morning
and show cause why he ahould not be
extradited.
The rax dates back 11 months. In
spector Boles, of the Prudential Com
pany, say that Veatch. while district
manager ,-tt Cheyenne, wrote policies for
Army officers stationed at Fort A. D.

Is possible to ascertain here and at tha
scene of the accident, eight persons
were burned to death, three fatally In
jured, two others so seriously Injured
that their lives are despaired of and.
scores of persons were cut, burned and
bruised In the wreck of the teachers'
special from Utlca to Washington on the
Belvedere-Delaware division of the Penn
sylvania Railroad at Martina Creek,
N. J., yesterday.
Tha line was reopened for traffic to
day. Bones of eight persons have been
taken from the debris and the wrecking
crew hassqutt work.
The missing, who are given up as dead,
are Miss Bessie Walker, teacher; Miss
Susan Sessions, friend of the teachers;
Mrs. Mary Allen. Miss Sophia Knolt.
Miss Louise Llndeman. Miss Sarah Jones,
all Utlca teachers: Harry Wilmer. Tren
ton. N. J., baggage-master of the train,
and James Blcknell. Philadelphia, tour
ist agent for the road.
Miss Eleanor Rutherford." a teacher In
the Utlca schools, died In the Kaston
Hospital last night, as did also Walter
Avnoy. of Trenton. N. J., engineer of
the Ill-fated train, and Charles Person,
conductor, of Stroudsburg. Pa.
Miss Augusta Lyte. of Utlca. Is In a
critical condition in the hospital suffer-
J Ing from g-neral burns and shock, and
ueorge v. rarsons, oi LAuiuvriviuo,
N. J, fireman. Is severely burned. Neither
Is espected to survive.
Officials of the railroad company are
uncommunicative as to the cause of tha
wreck. It Is the general belief that the
rails spread and caused the train to
leave the track and plunge over an em
bankment. Trackmen had been at work
at the point of the disaster, and It Is
said tha tracks were Jacked up, that no
signal was out and that the engineer,
believing he had a clear track, rushed
Into a death trap.
Of the H passengers, only a few
now remain near the scene of the wreck,
most of thoe able to travel having re
turned to Utlca and Syracuse last night
and today.

the fact that Oregon contributed 3S.000,
00 more to the reclamation fund than It
received, and pleaded for greater recog
nition. Tbe Secretary listened atten
tively and promised a personal visit to
that section as soon as his duties would

Sensational disclosures are expectea
next week In the examination of Quan
Ha Ray. a Corean. and C. C. Ostrander.
an alleged procurer, who are charged
with Inducing women and girls who
lived at Pocatello and nearby towns to
go to Ogden, where they were placed
on the "white slave" market.
The prisoners are said to have agreed
to expose an organization that operated
extensively In Salt Lake. Ogden, Poca
tello, Boise, Baker, Portland, Spo
kane and Wallace. The victims of pro
curers are taken. It Is alleged, either to
Salt Lake or Ogden. thence to the
