After a lull of nearly five months the police are called upon again to cope with a mysterious firebug, whose mania seems to be to destroy cheap lodging-houses, the sixth attempt of the kind having been made yesterday at a lodging house at 340H First street by a man who es caped before his work was discovered. He is believed to be the same man who made three attempts upon one house In the North End and tried to burn two others. It Is supposed that he Is demented. . The room was rented the night before to a stranger, a dark-complexioned man, nnarTiti A Uhnr.r The blaze was dlS- i coverei early yesterday morning, before ; )t na1 gained headway. Holes bad been bored In the walls and kerosene naa been poured Into them. The amount of needless work done showed that the man was unbalanced.. The police have a description of him. The method used in all six cases was the same. The room was rented early In the night and was abandoned before daylight. In most of the former cases the bedding was set afire. Before the beginning of the series of attempts a demented man was caught In the act of soaking his socks with oil and throwing them. Ignited, from a win dow In the Rheinpfalx Hotel, but he was In custody when some of the subsequent attempts were made. As all of the places attacked are in clusters of Inferior buildings each had ' contained the material for a bad confla gration and only good luck In discovering the fires quickly has prevented a seri ous fire, -probably involving loss of life.
