FORT FIGHT IS PROMISED Citizens of Town Bearing Xoted General's Name Say Historic Structure is Theirs De spite) Federal Act. SHERIDAN. Or.. March "A (Special.) Since th announcement that Fort Sheri dan had been given to Dayton by a Federal act engineered by United States Senator Chamberlain, citizens of this city have been vigorous in their protests against the removal ot the historic struc ture bearing General Phil Sheridan's name like thla hamlet. The Sheridan Commercial Club has taken up th caa with the Tillamook and Wlllamlna commercial bodies, and telegrams and letters have been sent to Senator Chamberlain r.t Washington op posing removal of the old blockhouse. A protest signed by the citizens of fciheri dan was forwarded to Washington, with resolutions of protest adopted by tha Commercial Club. Mr. Chamberlain replied that the act recommending the removal of the old fort to Dayton cannot be revoked. At' torney J. T. Simpson. Sheridan's oldest settler, appealed personally to Mr. Cham berlain, his boyhood chum and friend. To him Mr. Chamberlain replied that he regretted that Sheridan a earnest appeal could not receive his indorsement. Sheridan argues that th old structure Is so decayed that removal to a point as far distant as Dayton will wreck It. Then. It Is contended, the old fort 1 the only historical point between here and the Coast, and being situated on the main thoroughfare it interest traveler bent this way. Th Sheridan Commercial Club waa re ferred to th superintendent of the Slletx school by Mr. Chamberlain, who, he sa'd. was authorized to correspond with any Interested historical society or section concerning the fort. Superintendent Kg' bert. of the Si lets school, said the town of Sheridan had not been notified that the fort bearing this city's nam was open to donation. A movement Is on foot In Sheridan now to erect a glass frame over the old block house. This will have o be done by popular subscription by citizens of Sheri dan, and will cost JWO. If Sheridan resi dents are not allowed to save the fort, many say the blockhouse will never pass through this city in Its removal to Day ton. Many declare openly that they will see th old blockhouse In tha Yamhill River before they will consent to It re moval to Dayton. An interesting new chapter to the his tory of the old fort is promised, aa Shorldan stand at a most strategio point on th road between Grand Honda and Dayton, and the old fort will have to pas through this city. Sheridan can't sea bow Dayton can claim the historic fort Justly, even though tbe recent Fed eral donation gives it to Dayton.
