SIX MILES TO BE GRADED

OREGON CITT. Or, March IT. (Spe

Beaver Creek and Molalla will begin
Tuesday. Money haa been raised for
the grading of the first six miles, th
part specified in the aubscriptions to

completed aa fast as possible. Work
will commence Tuesday at a point near
Newell Creek, where It crosses the
Highland road, about three miles from
this city.

The directors figured on raising 1 1 -.-000

GUN STRENGTH IS BIG
CKCISER BOSTON" WILL HAVE
STRONG ARMAMENT.
Ship to Be Vsed by Oregon N"val
Reserve Equipped and Will Be
Brought Here 3Ir 15.
When tha cruiser Boston is turned
over to the Oregon Naval Reserve,
which will be May IS. she will have her
former gun strength, with the exception
that there has been one four-Inch gun
substituted for a six-inch piece thai was
carried during tha time of her memor
able participation In the battle of Manila
Bay as a member of Admiral Dewey's
fleet.
Commander J. XI. Ellicott, inspector of
the Seventeenth Lighthouse District, re
sumed hi dutleea locally yesterday after
a tour of the Puget Sound territory that
Included a atop at Bremerton.
While there he Investigated report
of coal tests made of Northwest fuel
recently on vessels of the Pacific fleet
wl:h a view to utilising them 1n connec
tion with the use of Onast coals In th
lighthouse service. While there he
viewed th Boston and was Informed
of her armament.
"When assigned to the Oregon Naval
Reserve the Boston will be In first class
steaming condition." said Commander
Ellicott. Bhe is being thoroughly gon
over .and considerable money ha been
expended to make th repairs and tnko
care of the overhauling. She will hnve
two eight-Inch guns, three six-Inch guns,
one four-inch gun and aix stx-poundera.
a-hlch should make an efficient battery
for all purposes that the naval reserve
force will require In their drills and
duties."
There will be some "red tape'' to be
unwound before the vessel la headed for
Oregon waters. A the Naval Reserve
bill was signed February 14 and CO days
mtaet elstpse before It becomes a law. It
will devolve on Governor West at th
expiation of that time to formally make
knosn to the Navy Department that
the State of Oregon has enacted a meas
ure nmklng provision for a naval fore
and that one of sufficient enrength Is
being maintained.
The Navy Department could order a
erew and a staff of detached officers on
duty at the Bremerton yards eiboard to
navigate th Boston to Portland, but It
I anticipated that a compromise crew
will be selected, the state being asked
to order north as many officers and men
at are available and the shortage will be
made up from the Bremerton force.

Catarrh, usually begins with irritated, inflamed membranes of the head,
rose and throat, from which there ,is a constant and copious discharge of
watery natter. Nature intends that these membranes shall be nourished by
the blood, but waste matters and impurities deposited into these delicate
parts, sets up inflammation and the discharge is a natural result. There i"s
only one way to cure Catarrh, and that is to remove the cause by purifying
the blood. Washes, sprays, inhalations, etc., do not reach the circulation,
and therefore can only afford temporary relief. S. S. S. cures Catarrh by
cleansing the blood of all impure catarrhal matter, and at the same time
building up the system by its unequalled tonic effects. In other words
S. S. S. cures Catarrh by purifying the blood so that the mucous surfaces
and linings of the body are supplied with healthy nourishment instead of
being continually irritated from the catarrhal impurities. Then the inflamed
membranes heal, the discharge is checked, head noises cease, the stomach is
toned up, and the throat is no longer clogged with mucus. Book on Catarrh
and any medical advice desired, free. S. S. S. is for sale at drug stores.
