Portland Is Indebted to the People's Amusement company, not only for liono feet of clever new first run films, nut for two vocal novelties of a fax better aualttr than Is looked for In motion pictunedom. The Star Trio at the Star Introduces three natty young men who sing up-to-date songs and accompany themselves brilliantly on the guit mandolin and banjo. The other vocal ewe- cess waa Miss Edwards, a comlo opera sinner, who made without exception the biggest bit of any singer who ever appeared at the Arcade. The feature picture at The Star. VICTIM OF TRICK GETS MAN Alleged Banco Artist Is Seized by One Who Lout at Game.' Equipped with a trick knife, a trick matchbox and a trick purse. Walter E. Pepper, alleged by the police to bo a professional bunco man. waa an-esiea yesterday morning by Patrolman Gould upon the complaint of A. J. Sine the day when that noted comedian. Tim Murphy. In the roio of Maverick Brander, th Congressman rrom Texas, and Will II. Bray, as Flshback. th self appointed minister to Dahomey, con vulsed th country with this comedy. It Jiaa proved a vehicle of boiaterous fun of the everlasting variety and no self-respecting stock company would think of running through a season without It. John Burton, In this instance. Is th breezy Texan. who cuts wide swaths In society at Washington, D. C To the rols Mr. Burton brings all hla customary humor of speech and manner, and Is funny enough to make a mummy mirthful. Ida Adair Is farewelllng this week In th Important role of "Bossy." the Senator s daughter, who "showed "em a few things in Washing ton society." Miss Adair is, as always, a charming creature and puta youth and Ingenuousness Into tho role. Our old friend "Billy" Dills, baptis mal nam William probably, but no one calls him by It, returns to th local company for this last week, and at both matinee and evening perform ances yesterday was tendered a demon stration that held the action of tho play several minutes.- Mr. Dills is seen in th part of Colonel Brassey Gall, who attaches himself and his ax-to-grlnd to Brander. The same delightful quiet method and dry humor that always make DIUs "different" ar as pro nounced as in th olden days and as welcome. Walter B. Gilbert, who also ends his engagement this week, is splendidly cast as Flshback. ihe colored aspirant for th office of Minister to Dahomey. 11 tho aggressive flamboyancy and flippant assurance of the negro who thinks he is In possession of tho coveted office Is realistic and true to life Mr. Gilbert portrays It. Pathetic in the axtreme Is the picture ha draws or tlia despairing and poverty-stricken Flsh back, after his months of waiting with the vast array of seekers after jobs at the Capitol. J. Frank Burke follows all the be loved traditions of Western despera does and Is mighty funny In his role of Major Yell, chairman of the investiga tion committee sent from Texas to look Into the conduct of their Senator. Another "fareweller" Is Henry Stock bridge, who geta many fat laughs for his dashing, chatty Impersonation of Knott Innitt, the private secretary to th Senator. Frank Denlthorne makes very stiff and uninteresting swain for Bossy In the role of Captain Fair lelgh Bright: Ronald Bradbury Is ex ceedingly comical as Colonel K. N. Pep per, a grafter, and Louis Woodford is most diverting aa a cuilud oeiinop, also a grefter. The rol of Mrs. Campbell affords Brenda Fowler opportunities for clever acting as well as for wearing some stunning gowns. Lillian Andrews is delicious in her Mrs, Malaproptsms and naivete as Mrs. Brander. whose only literary pursuit Is an etiquette book. and whose solo aim In life Is trying to follow Its rules. Most fascinating Is dainty Fay Balnter as Dixie, an adven turess, wlthsa baby star and plaintive, cooing Tolce. The staging this week is under direc tion of Earl Dwlre. since Marshall Far. hub learea immediately for California. Warmest Day of Ute Tear Lores Peo ple From Their Homes to Enjoy Sunshine Antos Fill Streets. Thousands. of persons visited the city parks yesterday to enjoy the sunshine. The day was ideal, th sun pouring down wtih almost Summer-like inten sity. Not a cloud flitted across the sky from early in tho morning until the orb disappeared behind the horizon. Every vehicle, every automobile and every other sort of a conveyance which waa obtainable did full duty. It was the warmest day of the season and th people seemed to desire to seek the haunts of nature In the open air and the wooded lanes. On the down-town streets th traffic was the thickest and the man with the baby carriage, the lad with the bicy cle and tho mor ambitious with his motorcycle were in evidence for the pleasure of Oregon's chief asset fine weather. Th crowds were unusually large In the parks. Tbe parks had the appear ance of Bummer and In some places where tho game Is allowed tho young men wero observed playing baseball. At the end of Washington street in City Park the crowd waa th largest of any in the parks, all due to the at tractive feature of tho "Zoo." The sprouting of leaves waa noticeable, and in the willow family the "pussies" were beginning to peep out beyond the bark. With the roses the leaves in sojn cases were fully formed, and it will ba only a short time before the verdure of tho rose will be sufficient to at tract attention. It is evident that th season Is considerably ahead of last year and there is some doubt as to the city's ability to have a sufficient quan tity of roses to serve during the Rosa Festival. If th season comes on two or three weeks earlier than last year th first crop of rosea will have disap peared, it is asserted. Ths weather orrico reported mar. Oregon and Washington enjoyed the finest day of the season, while in tn Middle West the cool breexes were e till In evidence, and Duluth and other Northern towns were close to the aero mark. As to the long continuation of th Dresent warm weather. Deputy Ob server Drake declared that it was de cidedly abnormal, not so much so in tho temperature as In the fact that the air seemed to be devoid of moisture. Tho outlook Is for rain in a few days.
