OREGON C1TT, Or., March 8. (Spe
cial.) William Newman, of this city,
died this morning; at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Schwartz, Harrison
and Eighteenth streets. About a year
ago Mr. Newman was injured in the
Oregon City planing mill by a flying
board, and it 'was necessary to remove
part of his skull. While at work Mon
day he was taken ill and started for
his home. On reaching the Schwartz
home he became very ill and asked per
mission to lie down. Before his wife
could reach his bedside he became un
conscious, and remained -so until his
death. A. William Newman was born
In Germany. December 19, 1867. He Is
survived by a widow and Ave children,
the eldest 18 years of age and the young
est a baby boy of 2 years. They are
Walter, Essie, Helen, Relnhalt and
Frank.

Th latest apple marker bulletin of the
Northwestern Fruit Exchange follows:
There Is an exceedingly heavy demand
for apples which can be shipped from pro
ducing point on the through rato. The
peculiarity of the market is that the trade
seem willing to pay very high price for
uch offerings, but when offered cold storage
stock from some Eastern point, even though
the final cost Is the same, they appear to
be much less willing to purchase.
This illustrate the exceeding importance
to the Industry not only of storage in tran
sit rates but also of adequate holding ware
house at the different producing stations.
The exchange has been fighting hard for
the restoration of the storage In transit rate,
and earnestly desires the active support ot
the local associations everywhere. Remem
ber, this privilege is vital to the welfare of
the Industry, and it Is the duty of every
shipper to put hi shoulder to the wheel, and
lend his assistance to the work being done
by his organisation In a matter affecting
him In dollars and cents.
In passing, the exchange wishes to say
that It Is again- completely sold out of all
cars listed for shipment from the Northwest,
and wants to hear Immediately from ship
pers having fruit on hand unsold, as we be
lieve that the market ia very near. If not
quite, at Its best, strawberrlea are begin
ning to occupy the attention of the Jobber
In the markets, and while the receipts of
this class of fruit are yet quite light they
will get heavier from now on, and we be
lieve that now Is the time to sell apples
generally speaking. The exchange is find
ing it necessary .to refuse orders for lack of
fruit. Shipper should, therefore, lose no
time tn listing their holdings with the ex
change. In our last bulletin we published the eare
of two car from Medford, Oregon, at quite
high price. We give hereunder sales of
three more cars from the same district, the
five cars comprising a block of fruit from
the orchard of one of the officers of the
