Brooks came to Portland about three weeks ajto anJ asserted that he rep resented farmers on the Oregon Short Line in Idaho, particularly In the dis trict of Twin Falls. The icraln has not been delivered, and the bills of lading are decided to be forgeries. Brooks left the city last Saturday, but before fcolna- sold 100 tons of hay to the Albers illlltns; Company for 111 a ton. to be shipped from Twin Falls. Idaho. The hay has been coming In. but In view of the alleged grain fraud, the ques tion now confronting the Albers Com pany, as well as other firms that have received consignments through Brooks, is whether he has paid the farmers In Idaho. If he has not done so It Is thought that Brooks baa obtained sev eral thousand dollars more than the figures en his araln dealings aggre gate. Brooks lived at the Alexandria Hotel, at Tenth and Alder streets. He left the city Saturday, saying he had busi ness In Seattle and would return In a few days. The bills of lading were said yesterday to be fraudulent, evidently having been forged. Leaving Carefully Timed. Captain of Detectives Moore said last night that a similar bunco game was worked on Puget Sound about this time last year, and the operator got way with several thousand dollars. In the Puget Sound case, and apparent ly in the Portland case, the operator appears to have timed his work so that he could escape and have several days' start of the officers before ex posure. As Brooks has been missing since Saturday. Detectives Day and Hyde have difficulty In obtaining a clew as to which direction he went. It was also learned last night that Brooks withdrew the small deposits he made In the banks, so that be haa ap parently been out nothing but bis liv ing expenses while In the city. None of the business men who dealt with htm credited him with such talent. He was regarded as a plain sort of man of average intelligence and not pos sessing unusual business qualifications. Murray, of Com pany Y of KnKlneers. charred with rob bing a gas meter at C Sixth street of $7. and Jimrj l Kennedy and Frank Walls, members of the same company, who are charged with receiving a share of the money. Mrs. Adeila Bean, pro prietor of a ronrr.tng-house at C. Sixth street, suspected the three soldier of committing the crime and went to Van couver Barracks and Identified them. The commanding officer ordered the soldiers sent to the guardhouse and Informed the Portland police. While they were In Vancouver Detec tives Cra.i'lork and ilallett arrested Kenneth Blair, who Is wanted In Port land on a charge of larceny by bailee. Marx B!-h. Jewelers, are the com plainants. They said that Blair bought d a men. Is of them and Ift the state owing them t-X Illair said he gave the diamonds to a yonr.g woman and that he Intended to pay the amount when be got the money. UNLICENSED DOCTOR FINED alnropath Is Acquitted; Chinese Practitioner Assessed $75. One conviction and one acquittal was the day's result In the prosecution of unlicensed doctors in the Municipal Court yesterday. In addition. Wing Lee. a Chinese practitioner who had been convicted previously, but whose sen tence had been deferred, was fined $75, being an increase over the regular sctiedule because be had been in trou ble before. Vladimir Jlndrm. who practices medi cine and surgery on an extensive scale, was convicted and was fined ISO. It was shown that be had a suite of five office rooms, equipped with surgical Instruments and a large assortment of drugs. He has licenses to practice in other stales, but baa never qualified In Oregon. A. Bertschlnger. a naturopath, was acquitted by a Jury, upon the conten tion of Attorneys Logan and Stevenson that the law Is not meant to cover electric treatments. The defendant showed better credentials than most of the others, having studied nine months In Davenport. Iowa.
