Abraham Ruef. the boodllng political
boss, would go to San Quentln at l:t
o'clock today, a stay of execution was
granted by Superior Judpe Lawlor to
Kuef for seven days. In which to ar
range his private affairs.
Ruef. whose rehearing order was va
cated by tha Suprema Court yesterday,
after that body had granted a rehear
ing, waa taken to tha county jail last
night
Under-sheriff Hamilton announced at
noon that Ruef would take the 1:45
boat for San Rafael, but tha stay of
execution Intervened at the last mo
ment. Attorneys Ach and Dozler ap
peared before Judge Lawlor shortly
before noon, and without argument
submltted a motion for tha arrest of
execution of the sentence to 14 years

would be taken to the supreme court
of the United States.
The decision of the Supreme Court
yesterday vacating on technical
grounds Its own order created much
comment. Following the original or
der granting Kuef a rehearing an up
roar was raised in the legislature ana
a resolution adopted providing for a
committee to Investigate the Supreme
Court. The ruling waa made the fea
ture of the propaganda for a constitu
tional amendment permitting the ap
plication of the recall to the Judiciary.
In tha first public statement that ha
has made during the last two years.
Ruef voiced sympathy for his family
and gratitude to the friends who have
stood by him. It was a home full of
poignant misery that he entered for
tha last farewells before surrendering
to the (Sheriff last night.
