ball here for rears, the San Kranciaco
players have accepted Modesto and
smarted at their task of getting Into trim
for the pennant season. There was noth
ing sensational In Sunday's performances,
but the ease with which that squad of
ballplayers, for the most part Idlers all
Winter, changed from civilians' clothea
Into baaeball uniforms and commenced
the work that will keep them busy for
the next eight months, speaks volumes
for the discipline that comes to the pro
fessional. Headed by Frank M. lah. prealdent of
the club, who has come along to keep a
watchful eye over the boys during the
next 11 days, the Seals were met at the
station by "Kid" Mohler. lnflelder Bob
McCauley and Pitcher Ben Coleman, of
Portland, who arrived the day before

and the ballplayers, escorted by 100 small
bova and hero-worshipers, set sail for
the Hotel Tynan, headquarters for the
team during Its stay In the valley!
Im Leaner, manager of the Modesto
Reds, welcomed the visitors on behalf
of his fellow-cltlxens, showed them the
main streets and told them he would
see them later at the grounds.
It's too early, of course, to be mak
ing any forecast as to the way the team
will shape up. but there Is but little
question that the squad met with pop
ular approval. Kverybody waa willing
to go to work with a vim. but Mohler
and the veterans understand the danger
of too much work and cautioned the
younesters to go easy. As It waa. Wea

terial by Mohler. were at It long after

on him to do the bulk of the receiving

Coburg Youth, Mistaken for Animal,
Killed by rrlend.
ECGENE. Or, Feb. 10.- -Clarence
TMpps. aged 17 years, waa shot and
killed by Harvey Sutherland, of about
the same age. In the hills tour miles
northeast of Coburg and Is or 11 miles
from Eugene. Sunday afternoon, the
latter mistaking the Phlpps boy for a
deer.

It was a deer, took careful aim and
fired. He waa horrified to hear a cry
from Green. He ran toward the spot
and found Fhipps dead, with a bullet
hole. In his head. The ball had entered
below the left nostril and lodged In
the back O' the brain. Death waa In
stantaneous. Sutherland ran all the way to Co
burg and told people what he had done,
while young Green watched over the
body of hla companion. A party of citl
sens went out and brought the body to
Coburg and It will bo burUd tomorrow.
The boys had known each other for
years, were good friends, and on that
account It Is thought thst no charge of
malicious killing will be brought. Coro
ner Gordon Is holding an Inquest over
the body of Phlpps ..oday. Phlpps Is a
son of Ira Phipps. living on a farm
north of Coburg. and Sutherland Is a
son of G. M. Sutherland, living In

Vancouver Tomorrow Have Good

Otto Berg and Jack Duarte will fight
at the Vancouver. Wash., auditorium, at
o'clock tomorrow night. Berg la an
artilleryman from the Eiist, holding the
middleweight championship of the United
Statea Army. He whipped Al Nelll In
As:or.a In two rounds, and fought a ten
round draw with Frlta .Holland, of Spo
kane. Holland has a decelon over Jack
Lester. Jack Grant says he believes Berg
to be the coining champion middleweight
tighter of the United Stair.
Duarte has fought 32 Tshta, and has
had two decisions sjalnst him. One of
these wa in a six-round fight with Frits
Holland, which was declared a draw, and
the other a four-round bout with Johnnie
O Keefe. Duarte has never been knocked
out. He whipped Ace Clementav of Port
land, in a ten-round fir to.
There will be two aix-round prelimi
naries al the auditorium tomorrow night,
one between Chuck O'Connell. of San
Francisco, and Harry Harrison, of
Astoria, we'ght 115 pounds. The other Is
between Private Courtney., of Vancouver
Barracks, and Toung Mitchell. Duarte s
sparring partner, weight 170 pounds.

Union officials in charge. Daniels made

baseman secured rrom Seattle.
Accompanying the contract was a
letter upsetting; the calculations of the
Northwestern critics who had predict
ed that Akin would urove to be the
champion holdout. Akin says that he
is well satisfied with the toims and
conditions under which he is to play,
and that he will leave for Los Angelrs
next Thursday.
