BOAT COMPANY IX LKAGt'E W1TII KOCTIIKIt.V I'AC1C. Henry Jennlng A Sons, furniture deal- 1 ers. yesterday announced the purchase of a full block on the East Side from the -Oregon Real KeLate Company for Io.Oa) -They will proceed this year to erect a building to cover the entire prop erty and will occupy It probably as a warehouse and branch retail establish ment combined. The building Is to be six stories high and of reinforced con- . Crete. The block la bounded by Grand and t'nlon avenues and Kast Flanders and Ea,t Gllsan streets. The O.-W. R. N. railway tracks run along the south side of the block, which lies in Sullivan's Gulch, and cut off the. southeast corner t of the property. The block has a front- ; age of 2-0 foet on Union avenue and 200 j feet on Grand. j Access. Given to Tracks. The property la known as block 111. Wheeler's Addition, and It lies partly on a side hill, extending from the high ground on the Kast Gllsan street side, down to the railroad tracks. The buyers already are making plana for leveling the ground to get It ready for a building site. There Is direct access to the rail road main line from which a spur can be built without trouble. "Our plana for the building are yet In definite, except that It will be a fireproof structure of reinforced concrete, tlx stories high," said Mr. Jenning yester day. "It probably will have stores on the ground floor all around, and we may sublet some of these. It la also possible that we will go Into the jobbing busl ness. and maintain a retail establishment In connection with the wholesale busi ness. The convenient trackage makes the property especially well aulted for a Jobbing trade. We nave been seeking an East Bide location for two years, as we have long realised what the rapid development on that side of the Willamette means In a business way. This property Is Just what we wanted. Already we have plans under consideration for leveling the ground. Factory District In Prospect. FJ. Henry Wemirie. who owns part of the block Just west of block 111. Is having It filled preparatory to- the erection of a building. The sale Is important aa it Drnbablr will result In the location of other factories on the blocks bordering on Sullivan's Gulch. That Portland Is the most tttlked-of eltv In the country. Is the opinion of Fred O. Jennlng. who returned last weeg after an extended trip through the East. Wherever I went my announcement that I waa from Portland immediately roused Interest, and I was plied with questions about conditions and prospects here. Nearly everybody. It seemed, had relatives or acquaintances In Oregon. Many times I was told about persons ho had left the East to visit Oregon d had reused to return to their oia homes. I met a great many persons. d made It a point to meet and talk to Shrtners. I consider that I did gome missionary work for Oregon on my own account." Since then, he admitted, the boats had not carried more transcontinental buslneaa destined for alley points than would amount in rreignt charges to Is month.
