PORTLAND, OREGON
CENSUS SHOWS RAPID PROGRESS OF
PORTLAND AND OREGON IN DECADE
State Has 672.765 People, While City, With Pop ulation .of 207.314, Has Increased 129.2 Per Cent
in Ten Years, Only Four Places in Country Making Bigger Cain.
EVIDENCE of tba treat forward
movamant la Ornon during tba
pt 10 years la contained In the
Federal census of 110. Figures pre
pared by the UoTirnoitnl'i enumerators
prava conclusively that many thousands
of people are migrating each year to
Oregon, coming bre to make their
homes and enjoy the many opportuni
ties that are not to be found In the
older and more densely eettled parts
of the country.
The census of 111 showed that Ore
gon has t7-.ti people, a vala of sS.7
per cent orer 1J0O. when the popula
tion was 411.&3. Although It la prob
able that soma people In the mora
Isolated portions of the state were not
Inclu-led In the enumeration, no seri
ous dissatisfaction was found with the
count.
Portland, the metropolis, outstripped
the rural districts and smaller cities
In the percentage of gain. Portland la
credited by the Federal Census Bureau
with a population of 207.31 . This Is
an Increase of HCTVL or 13-2 per cent
over I i)rt. Only four cltlea of mora
than 100.000 show a greater propor
tionate growth for the decade than
does Portland.
Portland's showing Is the mora re
markable because It la known that by
far the greater part of the gain ln
population waa mads during the past
few yesra. While the city was growing
from 100 to 10S. ths advance waa
much alower than after HOi. which was
the year of the Lewis and Clark Kx po
sition. Postal, bank, building and oth
er statistics Indicate that the propor
tionate growth baa been greater -with
each successive year and that the city
Is now progressing ss never before.
There has been no period In Port
lands history when the population was
not steadily Increasing. In fact, there
h.aa been only one decade In the 40
ears since the first census was tsken
thai the gain waa not more than 104
per cent. In li Portland had 1:1 peo
ple. Tea years later there was a popu
lation of :T. a gain of ISO 1 per cent.
Between li and 1170 the Increase la
population waa 1S1.& per cent: between
H70 and 1M0. Ill per cent: between
ai.d lt0. 11 per cent, and be
tween 10 and 100. at. per cent.
There Is today no question about
Portland's future. Conservstlve people
are predicting that there will be fully
40.000 people here when the neit Fed
eral census Is taken, while many be
lieve that the number will be even
greater. At the rate of Increase In the
past five years, the teO.000 mark would
be passed before 120. and every Indi
cation la that thia ratio will be main
tained. Portland and Oregon are Just
becoming well known to the people of
the East, and the rast agricultural ter
ritory tributary to I"ortland. especially
Central Oregon. Is experiencing unpre
cedented development.
The excellent population showing of
Xrt'nd Is not due to the annexation
et suburbs. Ia tbls respect It le un
like many citlea that were near the
top of the column In percentage of In
crease. Heatlle. for Instance, has
gathered Its suburbs under ths munic
ipal wing until It spreads over an
area of ll square miles with Its total
population 317.17. Portland covers
only 4 square miles and baa a number
of populous suburbs that could be an
nexed without Ita area equaling that of
the Pugrt Sound city.
The original flgurea for both Port
land and rieattle were considerably re
duced, the elimination In Portland com
prising 1S.74 names. Census IMrector
Durand announced that there had been
no Intentional frauds In Portland, but
he maintained that namea had been re
tained which srtould be eliminated.
These Included gangs of railroad labor
ers who were not found In Portland
by tha special agents who were sent
here to check up. Citizens of Port
land contended that the deductions
did this city an Injustice, asserting thst
the laborera whose nances were
stricken from the lists really belonged
la Portland.
Portland, however, entered no formal
protest against the findings of ths
census bureau. It was tha general
opinion that the city's census, aa offi
cially announced, made auch a favor
able showing that It waa not worth
while protesting. Portland people are
not worrying, for they have every rea
son to believe that when the next
census Is announced, thta city will lead
by a wlda margin as tha metropolis of
the Pacific Northwest.
There l also every reayon to be
lieve that other parts of Oregon will
build up much faster In the future than
they have In the past. No other state
In the I'nlon offers such favorable tip
portunltlea for farmers, dairymen,
stockmen and orchardtsts. The great
est factor In the pending development
Is new railroads, especially tha lines
Into Central Oregon.
14 . Potatoes Weigh 3 6 Pounds.
William Kraber thought lie had them
all skinned to death when he announced
through the Itemlser that he had a
doxen potatoes that made a good half
bushel. But now comes R. T. Pierce, of
near Dallas who says he has him beat,
not so awful much, but enough so as to
be noticeable, and the potatoes are In
IMwIn Jacobson'a window, where they
can be seen by anyone who happens to
doubt this statement. They comprise 14
In number and tip the scales at 26
pounds. Dalian ItemlsiT.
