Placer mining In Orecon was th pro docsssor of qaarts mining, a It has been In most other places. Following th dtecoeery of th placers proipect- rs went Into th hills surrounding th graeel deposits to search for th veins from which ths gold had been dsrlTsd. Ia many places they wer successful, and In many a gulch stamp mills wr soon operating, pounding th gold out cf th Inclosing quarts. Th operations wer salons! aouch to show th groat promise of both sections of th Stat sad to attract to them many man anxious to gain a portion of th hidden wealth or to get hold of some piece of ground that would be th basis upon which they could rear a struelur of dishonesty and deceit that would en iM, them to fleece th public out of Its boardings. Unfortunately for Oregon the class of "wildcat promoters- was numerous and Oregon suffered from their activities as bas perhaps no other Stat. In 1161 a collar of th slock boom cam, carrying with It a collapse of many a Uglllmat mining Industry, and quarts mining steadily decreased until In cam th financial stress that resulted la th closing of th smelter at Fumpter. With th local market for their ores and concentrates gon and being unable to ship to th more dis tant smelters, most of the mine were eblta-ed to close down, and only two In Kastern Oregon continued production. The Columbia and the Cornucopia con- jnued In a small way. but with only a production. Southern Oregon had atr been on as firm a foundation In quarts mining a had Eastern Oregon, and th mills and mines, on by one. discontinued trer also. Only one portion of th Southern Oreon district could continue, and there the operators of th Queen at Bronze copper mine continued their policy cf operating their smelter at Ta kllrra during th Summer season only. Karly In ll the ttumpter smelter passed Int th hands of th Northwest ameUlcg Refining Company, which at once besran preparations for Its re opening. Th stimulus of this re open -lag Is the most Important fact In th mining industry of Oregon for th past year. Eery wher new activity In th mines tffaa. U3rences between own ers wer adjusted, litigation was set tled and th production of or was resumed. In the Rumptor district proper th Summer Monmouth, th Ibex and th Imperial mines have resumed and th early open ing of others for development ts looked for. Here. too. th Orovlll Gold Dredg ing Company la prospecting Its ground thoroughly with th purpose of Install ing n gold dredg along ths Powder tltver. Th Highland mln has also become a steady producer. Th Sumptcr Valley Railroad Is plan ning a branch Into .th SusanvllI dis trict, and when this Is completed, we may expect to hear from mines that have ore awaiting shipping facilities. In other regions of Oregon mining work Is going forward. Late In th th West Coast mines of !lo- hemla changed hands, and already the new owners have shipped rich ore from tho old workings. Other discoveries In Bohemia Indicate that this old mining district may again Join tho producing ranks. This district. Ilka others, has suffered In ths past from dishonest pro moters. On tha Santiam. In ths Gold Creek district, development has gon forward at a steady pace. The Black Eagle mln has recently Installed power drills and will explore rapidly what seems an excellent prospect. On th middle fork of th Willamette and In Crook and other counties of Central Oregon the coming of the rall- roaJs has stimulated development, and several owners are getting ready for tho day when their ore can be shipped from th mine to market. Altogether the opening of 1911 is a time of great er promise for substantial progress to the mining Industry than Oregon has ever seen before.
